Melbourne CDB accomodation - October - Mid week - OzBargainer tips

hoping for some ozbargainer tips for accomodation for a 3 night mid-week stay in Melbourne CBD in October.
Taking the wife to Harry Potter (so that already broke the bargainers back), and hoping for some tips from anyone with local knowledge on accomodation

Still needs to be good (so no backpackers ;) ), but maybe theres a few bargain gems out there that will still win points with the wife while satisfying the bargain side ;)

any tips appreciated
thanks

Still needs to be good (so no backpackers ;))

Why do you assume backpackers aren’t good?

The word backpackers in itself isn't good

  • i usually stay at the Atlantis Hotel just across from southern cross station etihad etc
can usually get it around $100 per night if you shop around. You can book now and pay on arrival also

    • That's literally on the other side of the city …

Yes and that 4 minute free tram ride is soooo irritating to hop on and off…..

Not sure how long it's been since you caught a tram down Bourke Street but it sure ain't 4 minutes

        • yeah, i'd assume anything on the free tram loop area would be more than suitable

        • …to hop on and off the most congested packed-in-like-sardines tram ride in Melbourne.

@tranter: This is OzBargain, not ozcomfytravelling.

            • @oscargamer: That's true. It's a challenge though to get on and off with a pram which is what we usually have to do.

When I'm working in the CBD for an overnighter I always use Airbnb. You can get really central and good ones for low prices.

    • Thanks.
Got any previous ones you've stayed at you can vouch for?

      Have yet to use Airbnb

Always best to check reviews and see what's close to where you're going. This has been my goto in recent times simply because it's close to the office. Other times you can get some decent cheap ones around the state library like this.

We saw the play few weeks ago (no spoilers!) and stayed at the quite reasonably priced Oaks on Lonsdale, which is an apartment hotel just around the corner from the Princess Theatre. We could even duck back to our room to avoid the intermission toilet queues! There is also a Quest on Lonsdale a few doors down. Be sure to pop into The Imperial Hotel, which has an amazing HP themed rooftop and menu. And check out Groupon for the Melbourne Marriott deals, we really enjoyed our between-shows dinner and drinks there, and we also hit up the Storyville Bar for some magical cocktails.
Have fun, the whole production is a great experience!

  • Hotel Windsor, 5-star hotel on Spring Street and only 2 minute walk to the theatre. Lovely, historic hotel with personal friendly service. Keep an eye on online booking sites such as Orbitz.com and Cheaptickets.com, they regularly have 30% off rooms. Combine with discount code and you can get Superior rooms for around $150/night which is a bargain for what you get. Ask for a room overlooking Spring St or Bourke St. Traditional rooms are even cheaper but also smaller and no outlook/view.

    • I assume there's a zero missing from that price ;)

      • Yeah fixed!

    • This is where I stay when I’m in Melbourne. So good not having to walk far when watching Harry Potter (watched it in April; make sure you collect the pins after each part)
