I feel a bit guilty not knowing this one…but Im not sure what the issue is.
Basically I have a VPN out to the Internet and I also have a number of laptops on the same network as my main machine. With the VPN connected I cant ping the laptops…let alone remote to them.
What is the easiest way to resolve this issue??

thank you for the response. I do know what a VPN does otherwise whay would I have purchased it!! It was the specific setup that I wasnt sure about. I also dont have it setup on my router becuase its not somthing I waant on all the time.

Turn off the VPN before pinging or remoting into local laptops. Simples.
Google split tunnelling and learn what it means and how to set it up for the type of VPN you are using. Usually all VPN clients have some way of setting it up. Might use different terminology for the same function though
Check if you can configure a more specific route on your PC.
Which VPN are you using. I use PIA and the software on desktop has the option to allow local lan traffic. I use a NAS and I can access the same as well as my router page via their IP address even though my VPN is always on.
Even if you don't have that option. I have previously experimented and have been successful by using 2 different IP addresses for my main pc.(like 192.168.0.x and 192.168.1.x) 1 IP range was for local network and other one was for internet with vpn.
Learn what VPN is/does before turning it on.
The whole point of VPN is creating a 'Private' tunnel between two (or more) systems. Once initiated you'll lose connections to all other devices on your local network (unless they too are part of the same VPN).
Easiest way to resolve this is to run the VPN on your router (which all your devices are connected to, rather than just a client on the one system). It's more complicated to setup and requires a router with firmware support for VPN (something that can be flashed with custom firmware such as DD-WRT, Tomato, etc.)
