Adelaide to Mt Buller (VIC) - Driving Vs Flying

Hello all,

I am stuck on a decision which I can't seem to settle on.

Planning a trip to Mt Buller from Adelaide in the school holidays.

The trip is planned for 4 days Sunday to Thursday and I can't seem to convince myself to flying given the costs involved, but then I think hard, and see myself driving for 2 days. So I am trying to come to a decision, and I need your help to decide.

Driving Cost Variables: ADL>MEL Return ($150 fuel)
Flying Cost Variables: ADL>MEL Return flights ($360) for 3 people & Car hire in MEL is $345 for 4 days.

So in summary, the only variables between the two are time and about $550 in cost difference.

  • Unless I am mistaken, the purpose of your trip is to enjoy Mt. Buller, not to do a road trip of driving many hours for a few days. If that is correct, fly.
You will still need to drive from Melb (Tullamarine) airport, but at least you are on the right side of the city to get to the mountain as quickly as you can.

3 - fly to Queenstown and you can get 4 days of snow action.

  • You can get a Coach from Melbourne or even Tullamarine to Mt Buller.

Don't forget you would have to drive home tired…

Look at it this way: You're paying $90 per person per day extra to extend your 2 day holiday by 2 days. And you'd be less tired.

You have to find a car hire place that lets you drive up the snowfields otherwise you would still be catching a bus from lower down

imo either choose to get a bus pick you up from adelade or pick you up from melbourne airport or the cbd

Also considering how their dynamic lift passes work that $550 difference gets eaten by a single day of lift passes and locking them in early now and buying them online you can save the $550.

After I read your comment, I rang up the car hire company and they are telling me I can't go above the snow line or use snow chains. Which means if I fly the only option is to go by bus.

  • OP, have you looked at going to NZ?

I think everyone in Adelaide has considered that and not just for the ski opportunities.

I particularly like the way you advance the trip to NZ be one-way.

    • Considering the same thing. Flying to NZ seems to be a better use of time for a short trip for the kids to experience snow

  • 3) fly and bus
