[UPDATE 1] TPG ADSL2+ Is Very Very Slow, No NBN in My Area Yet, Is There Any Good Alternative?

Hi guys, user @ChiMot suggested me to write an update on my situation. I don't know if anyone else is interested but yeah, this is basically my update on my original post right here:

TPG ADSL2+ Is Very Very Slow, No NBN in My Area Yet, Is There Any Good Alternative?

Well, get ready for a wall of text !!

Telstra Technician and Open Wire

Alright so……, well the Telstra technician didn't come. Basically one of the telstra technician called us and they asked me on the phone whether there's an "open wire". I asked him what does that mean and basically he said an open wire is a cable that's exposed out in the open and it's dangerous to pedestrians/cars. He literally asked me if I could see a cable hanging on the street and of course I told him no.

Anyway, I reaffirmed myself and told him that no it's not an "open wire" as TPG told me that it's something wrong with some cables underground (no idea what kind of cable it is or what exactly happened to the cable itself, TPG didn't say). The technician continued that if it's not an "open wire" then it's not his job to fix it. He insisted that I have to call Telstra/TPG again to see how to go from there.

Another call with Telstra

Hence, right after the call with the technician, I immediately called Telstra again and gave them my case number. After speaking with the Telstra operator he basically said that no they can't really help me because I don't have an internet service/landline subscription to Telstra, he said that I have to go through TPG, let them escalate the situation and THEN if TPG technicians/engineers can't fix the problem on their own they have to contact Telstra.

Another Call with TPG

So I was like "alright alright, let's keep a level head here, don't be impatient" and I called TPG again for the second or third time. Called them, explained the whole situation to TPG and basically they said the same thing as what they told me last time, which is "we will escalate this situation, etc. etc…".

Bear in mind that at this point I didn't have any internet connection at home because as it seems like TPG disconnected my internet service after my first call with them a few days ago(I don't know why) so I had to use my kogan mobile hotspot for internet connection. It's okay because I have the Extra Large Kogan mobile plan on my Android phone but still it's quite painful as I don't want to waste my mobile data too much.

Fast forward 30 mins or so and TPG called us again and the representative told us to test our TPG internet connection as now the internet should be back up again. Me and the landlord tested it and yes the internet is back up but it doesn't fix anything as now honestly we're back to square 1, i.e. the internet speed is around 2 MBps or lower, it rarely ever goes up to 6 Mbps or more and it disconnects intermittently. What's worse is the upload speed as I can only get 0.17 Mbps and it rarely ever goes up to the promised 1 Mbps upload speed

My Current situation/solution

My landlord doesn't seem to be too concerned about it, closed the case and just accepted the whole situation, it's one of those "it is what it is" kind of deal and he's "okay" with the speed as long as we have some internet connection and he can continue working on his stuff. I get it because if you're a light internet user with no netflix, no movie downloads, no gaming, etc then you won't have any problem with that speed I guess. I, on the other hand, consider myself to be a quite heavy user. I can easily use around 200 GB++ per month.

So, I tried to have another conversation with the landlord and basically here's what I can do; a lot of people recommended me changing to Optus Wireless broadband and yes I can go to Optus 4G wireless broadband for $85/month (the one that offers 500GB data cap) but my landlord wants to increase my rent by $10/week, basically $40/month) at least until my area gets NBN connection.

OR, another user, @Martijn (thanks so much for the suggestion mate) mentioned W3networks Air Fibre. I actually just contacted them today and I'm planning to register for one of their plans. One of their technicians will apparently come to my address next week once I register for a plan and they will test the signal strength in my area. If I can get a good speed then yeah I think I'll pick that one as they offer pretty good wireless connection speed coupled with unlimited data cap

If everything goes well and I'll probably go with the Air Fibre, the $70/month one for 30Mbps down/6Mbps up

So yeah, thanks so much for all the help guys! Seriously I really appreciate it as you guys helped me a ton. There were so many recommendations thrown at me and that's actually a good thing because now I know what are the options in the market. Personally, I think this TPG ADSL2+ connection is unacceptable and shouldn't exist in 2019.

      Cheers man

    you meant $69.95, right?

wow looks good, and will similar with our current tpg adsl2+. we dont need home phone/voip anyway
    and no contracts!!!

how come no other company do the same thing like this? sounds too good.
anyone can think of what are the catches?

    • Hi there mate, yeah yeah that's the one haha.

"how come no other company do the same thing like this? sounds too good.
anyone can think of what are the catches?"

hahah I'll see mate, I'll try to use it for a few months first if everything goes well~

  • If you're willing to pay $70 for 30mbps then $85 for 4G isn't that much extra and the speed increase will be substantial. How tight is your budget?

    • +1

      Hi there mate,

Well it's not so much about the $70 vs $85, it's just the fact that W3Networks Air Fibre doesn't have any data cap whereas the $85 Optus 4G plan has 500GB data cap per month.

This is a big selling point for the $70 W3Networks plan as the internet will be used by 2 people and we might burn that 500 GB data cap rather quickly and have to pay more $$$ per month to get more data.

      • And I heard with Optus there is no data cap after 500gb means if you go over you need to pay…. If not careful this could cost hundred $ more.

        • @ChiMot

Agree with you mate, pretty much what you said yup
