Anyone have any good suggestions for mounting bikes on a wall? They need to be flush as possible as we’d like to mount them in a garage so the cars can fit in there as well.
Bike rack for wall
Comments
Bunnings now have ceiling mounted hoists $25 that can lift anything
This one? https://www.bunnings.com.au/handy-storage-bike-ceiling-hoist… Looks pretty good
Yes, that one, its essentially the same as the one i have put in, works well
So… all in all you're just after a bike rack for the wall?
Hey, iforgotmysocks, leave my post alone!
Not cheap, but really good for saving space
https://www.steadyrack.com/Thanks, although I'm looking for something where the bike is more flush against the wall.
The rack swings around so you can have the bike flush against the wall
SteadyRack is the gold standard. A friend has got three to store his road bikes on the garage wall in front of his car. When swung they are very space efficient. The SteadyRack web site doesn't really show how well they can swing, also depends on how wide your hand bars are which will be the same with most other options.
Another good option is a top bar hanger like this one from bike corp:

How far will my bike stick out from the wall when pivoted against the wall?
It really depends on the width of your handlebars, saddle height and pedals. It will fold until the handlebars touch the wall, however not quite 90 degrees or flat to the wall. For a normal road bike, we would generally allow about 90cm or around 18 inches and for a MTB with wider bars, around 100cm or 20 inches from the wall.1m is probably going to be too far in my situation.
@ShortyX: 1m at the widest part (handlebars), rest of bike would be much more flush
@AncientWisdom: Thanks. I have a 29" MTB on an XL frame and I did a quick test - the pedals seem to limit how close the wall it can go and since we don't have a lot of space at the front of our cars, I don't think it will fit.
The garage side walls aren't an option for us, so I may have to go for a simple wall rack mount and mount them high so the front of the cars can still can park close to the front wall.
@ShortyX: That's a tight fit, but sounds like a plan!
I used something similar in the past. It sorta looks like this and I did get them from Bunnings but they were far cheaper than this
They work in a similar fashion to the steady rack that I was also looking at, I just couldn't bear to part with that much dosh.
You can also swing your bikes at an angle to use up less space, it's just manually hung/positioned.
I think I still have a photo from the old place.
edit* I found the exact one that I used
Nice. I did exactly the same thing except put them at a height so the rear wheel touches the floor so the bike can just be swung up instead of lifted, and about twice as close together. Never thought about alternating the bikes up/down like you though!
These have worked fine for me in the past.
https://www.bunnings.com.au/pinnacle-wide-range-tool-holder_…Thanks - found this - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-5K9SyS81L4
Really depends on what type of bike and what is the type of wall you're mounting them on.
I have the same problem. I just used plastic hooks mounted into brick for my two road bikes. Road bikes are easier because you can hook under the handlebar and the seat, this brings the lower part of the bike in closer to the wall. Then I just put some padding on the wall where the rear skewer would touch the wall. They sit very flush.
I use these in my apartment, keeps the bottom of the bike right in against the wall.

I have this one and love it: https://www.chainreactioncycles.com/au/en/feedback-sports-ve… (shop around of course!)
The arms are adjustable and if you want your bike to sit closer to the wall, just slide the bike frame further along the arms (the handle bars are going to be the issue but you can always turn them).
Where are you planning to mint them? In front of or beside the car and how many bikes? Mounting them in front of the car the wisest bit ( handlebars) should be above the bonnet leaving only the width of the pedals down low, much less than 1m. Also, unless you have a serious downhill mountain bike the widest the bars should be is around 750mm.
Here is another option..

Ended up installing those and they work well - thanks again.
good to hear you found an option that works for you.
I currently have 4 bikes in the garage,
2 x adult hanging from an unused punching bag frame, so the bikes hang over the front bonnet off to one side.
The 2 kids bikes sit in the middle of the 2 cars, its really annoying.
Bunnings now have ceiling mounted hoists $25 that can lift anything, My local TK Maxx also has some they have a clearance sticker at $17.95.
I currently have a stand up paddle board hanging over the top of my car..
you could invariably have them hoisted between the end wall and over the bonnet section of the car.
Some stores have 2x bike rack stands, one bike ie essentially at ground level and the other is lifted above, they can be free standing and you could put it at the end of the garage in front of the car bonnet.
There are also J hooks that screw into the wall and you hang the bike from it along the side or end wall.
