Dell G3 3579 15" Gaming Laptop i7-8750H, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, GTX 1050Ti - $1047.20 Delivered @ Dell eBay

PYLON

Unless you wanna wait for laptops with a 1650/1650Ti, this is not a bad deal.

There's also:-

The same laptop with a 1TB HDD for $999.20, not a bad deal if you have a 2.5" SSD lying around and don't mind the white colour.

And for futher savings, i5 8300H + 1TB HDD + GTX1050 for $899.20, if you don't mind the noticeably worse GPU for $148 less and have an SSD to swap the HDD with.

Finally, if you're deciding between the Dell and the Acer Nitro deal below, according to this, the Acer has a slightly better display but worse battery life. The Acer has 4 USB ports (2x USB 2.0 + 1 x USB 3.0 Type-C + 1 x USB 3.0 Type-A) while the Dell G3 has 3 USB Ports, all USB 3.0 Type-A. And of course, the Dell has a better GPU and a bigger SSD but no HDD.

note that cooling system of G3 is not a good match for 6 core i7H. i5H model is a more balanced choice

    • Can confirm this. It’s an issue with all the G systems. Had a G7 and was consistently thermal throttled while playing Overwatch, on all low settings at 150 FPS. Returned for another laptop instead, as had other issues with it as well.

      • I thought G7 had a very good cooling system!!

        • Maybe the new 2019 one's do? My brother has one and says it's running great. Though he's doing more video studio stuff with it.

      • Which laptop did you replace the G7 with?

I'll probably get negs but I ended up going with a MacBook. Was just sick of Windows, plus I'm already deeply invested into the Apple ecosystem so it just works.

          • @Zazer:

That's ok. Apple has its own thermal throttling issues as well.

What makes the apple ecosystem "just works" apart from the phone call/iMessage integration?

            • @cwongtech: I don't do high-end tasks on my MacBook and the G7 was also too heavy. The things that 'just work' is mainly iCloud Drive, that's where I store all my files which I use daily.

                Oh..
That's easily replaceable by any cloud services

If you ever need to choose a windows laptop, I would suggest a business class one (not a gaming one), they're very sturdy.

                Enjoy your macbook!

@cwongtech: Windows is the issue with Windows laptops, bloatware you can’t remove or it returns without warning (look at you Candy Crush), patches that install regardless of you being ready or wanting them installed. The entire OS is a nightmare. We are building an image for deployment at work and it’s been hell for 12 months

    • Cooling in some reviews seem to say it is not an issue:

Dell G3 15 Review: Affordable PC gaming on the go
      Source: The Indian Express
Overall, Dell G3 15 is a decent budget gaming laptop. And it is priced reasonably for its specifications. But is it perfect? The answer would be near-perfect. Like every other product, Dell G3 15 has its own strength and weaknesses. The laptop is sturdy and bulky at the same time. It has thick bezels around the display, which is glare-proof.

      Dell G3 15 3579 review – great performance at a reasonable price
      Source: Laptop Media
Overall, there isn’t much to be said about the Dell G3 15 3579. It didn’t surprise us with anything special, however, it also didn’t let us down on any occasion. It has a decent cooling system thus good performance. Battery life is excellent providing 5-6 hours of browsing and watching videos and almost two hours of gaming, although we would recommend carrying the charger when gaming.

      Review summaries from Notebookcheck

  • Hi Guys, How is this one compare with Y530 Lenovo ?

    It's $1199 ATM

    • Might be worth considering the one I linked below …better spec from a lower range compared to the Y530

    • Dell is more reliable and has better Customer Support than Lenovo

  • +1

200 nit screen according to notebookcheck. I'd pay the difference for the Lenovo L340 (15) to get a GTX1650, 16gb RAM and a 250nit (still dim)

    https://www.lenovo.com/au/en/laptops/ideapad/ideapad-l-serie…

    • WoW, Looks good my man, Free upgrade to 16 GB RAM and with 1t HDD, which Y530 doesn't have. But how is GTX1650 compare with GTX1050TI?

      • 1650 is much better. Just came out vs the 1050Ti which came out yeeears ago, and is a much slower card.

        • Cool, Thanks my love, I think I'll go with L340 then

      • How do you get the free upgrade to 16GB RAM?

Ah, I see. "Free 16GB upgrade from 8GB RAM.
Offer valid for selected L340 PCs, ends 1st July 2019. T&C apply."

    • Plus has 11% cash back with Shopback at the moment.

    • Compared to the $999 Dell still available, the L340 deal ($1139 with Shopback) has
      - 8GB more RAM (worth $60?)
      - 1650 4GB GPU with roughly 16% more performance
      - worse screen gamut (only 39% sRGB vs 60%)
      - 128GB NVMe vs the Dell's 16GB Intel® Optane Memory and 1TB 5400rpm HDD
      - i5-9300H (4-Core, 4.1GHz, 8MB) vs i7-8750H (6-Core, 4.1GHz, 9MB Cache)

Some Dell G3 reviews say the frame becomes very hot while gaming but suggesting the Dell G5 a better option because it uses the Dell G7 frame. Do your own research.

    • I thought the G5 with i5 cpu & 1060gpu a reasonable option. The 15" G5 i5 becomes hot where the screen hinge is located on the frame apx area 3" X 1.5" which is well out of reach, remainder of unit is cool. Battery seems to last apx 1.5 to 2hrs of very solid Diablo 3 game playing. General relaxed net browsing apx 4hrs. Noticed the fan noise while gaming with the wall charger on. Disconnect the wall charger and fan noise goes away. Also believe the standard G5 Thunderbolt 3 interface would be useful for remote area charging, as well as other stuff. Do consider the laptop weight, by comparison these units are a little weightier but not a problem while using the recent ozb $15 15" HP backpack. Delivery was slightly ahead of time. Out of the box it took apx hour to setup and required one support call which was v good. Very pleased with unit so far, would buy again & recommend. Do your own research.

  • Had a look at one of these the other day. Daughter's friend has one and I was installing some software on it for her (legit btw). It felt slow to me. I had a poke around and it was using a "normal" SSD. Still a m.2 but SATA, not NVME. Makes a huge difference, in my opinion.

    • As someone who never experienced SATA SSDs (I jumped from a crappy WD Green in my old PC to a laptop with an NVMe drive), are SATA drives really that bad? Cause I've heard most people say it doesn't make much of a difference in daily use. I mean it makes sense if you're saturating every little bit of performance from the drive, but even for an occasional software install?

  • I would say that i5H option highlighted by OP is a very good deal. stick in an ssd and replace the panel with a good 300nit one (costs around $120 or less) and you've got a cheap gaming portable rig with decent performance, half the proboems, and much better screen.

    • Can you show me a compatible panel with at least 80% sRGB colour gamut, and at least 250 nits?

      • +1

can't you search on panelook? mate
        lp156 wf6 spp2

        • Thanks, that's great. However, how do you know the screen connections will be compatible? Is there a screen replacement guide/website that you would particularly recommend? Thanks so much!

  • Any latitude deal?

  • The performance specifications are very good, but be aware (as usual for budget laptops), that the color gamut is only 61% of sRGB according to laptopmag and 58% of sRGB and 200 nits (also known as cd/m^2) according to Notebookcheck.
