Laptop Buyer Wants Refund - Advice Needed (Sold on Gumtree)

Sold a laptop around four weeks ago. Was working ok when sold. Buyer now says it regularly overheats and shuts down, the battery only lasts for 20 mins and the power cord plastic has become brittle and broken. When last in my possession it all tested ok: power supply was fine and undamaged, battery seemed ok and showed as "good" in bios and it didn't overheat or spontaneously shut down as claimed.

If they'd come back to me within a few days of the sale I'd have refunded however it's been a month. Thoughts please.

You have no obligation to do anything. Do they know where you live? If not ez ignore.

  • Is this via eBay or gumtree….. And paid by…

  • Did you sell it cash via gumtree? eBay?

Chances are he broke it himself. Or else he owned an identical model that was defective and he'll give you that back rather than yours. Not your problem!

It was a cash payment through Gumtree made in a neutral location. Checking back it looks like it was sold in early April so more like two months ago.

You don't have to do anything. Block their number for peace of mind if you want.

Now OP might need to block his PM too. :P

I'm big on being ethical…but yeah, 2 months means no refund. It's entirely likely they screwed it themselves.

  • Laptops require good ventilated operating conditions and heat kills batteries.

I fried a Power Adapter once, it happens, they get hot.

    Wear and tear…

  • Thoughts please.

It depends on where the listing was published.

  • Given its over 2 months I would just let him know what you have said to us. If there was an issue with it he should have got back to you within the week if not as soon as there were any issues. Then its still up to you to see whether you do anything about it. That's gumtree. That's why things are cheap. That's why you buy at own risk.

There will be a thread next asking us all 'buyer not responding to requests for refund for faulty laptop. What do I do?'

If you honestly present the laptop for sale with no issues that they say. Even so months have past. Its not your issue. The money they gave you is already spent anyway I suspect. I don't know why buyers don't understand how gumtree works.

I'm just here for the comments.

  • Can you remember the laptop model number out of interest?

    Cheers

  • Buyer beware. Ignore them - they paid a price they considered fair given the risks of buying on Gumtree.

I sold an iPad once that was working fine and the guy was back the next day claiming it wasn't working. I decided just to give him his money back and then he said that was an admission of guilt of selling dodgy products and I should be ashamed of myself. It turns out he was trying to use some sort of work-specific overlay on the iPad, that I later found out caused problems. Needless to say when I got back the "defective" iPad, it worked perfectly.

  • Like everyone else has said, within a week, alright, maybe it wasn't in as good condition as you thought, but 2 months and it's probably caused by misuse. Overheating because they install too many programs or used it in very dusty environments harming the battery in the process. Or they could have left it in a 0% battery state for a week or two which also kills batteries fast.

    Stick by your guns.

You know laptop better than them.

Tell them its a used laptop and was working fine for you.

Then dont enter into any more correspoondence

You did not supply any warranty

  • Tell them in a polite way…. To bad, so sad.
