Upgrading My Dell Inspiron 5680's RAM

Hi guys,

Got myself one the Dell Inspiron 5680 not long ago with 1060GB and installed a Samsung 860 SSD as well.

Problem is I want to upgrade my RAM from 8 to 16GB but I don't think I can find the original Samsung 1x8gb for dual channel.

Does anyone know what are the cheapest but still reliable options to achieve this (ie replace it)?

Thanks in advance!

  • what is the current 8gb ram in your dell?

run CPU-Z (freeware - 1.4mg) to get the specs if you don't want to pull the ram out to check.

always best to get some specced ram.

    • I actually checked with a software and physically as well and it's samsung m378a1k43cb2-crc. Seems like it's mostly used for wholesale

  • +5

    don't worry about mixing ram

just get the cheapest 8gb ddr4 stick and you'll be fine

    • Sounds good. Do you know what the form factor is? Is UDIMM or 288 pin the form factor?

    • Do laptop RAM fit my desktop?

      • Sorry, wrong system, I see inspiron and wrongly assume laptop.

        Desktop Kingston below:

        • Sorry how do you know that this will work? Would like to learn more.

          Cheers

          • @crosx44: It's 2400MHz so the speed will match with you other stick. The system will sync timing to the lowest common denominator so there wont be any incompatibility issues. We have ~600 Dell desktops / laptops at work and always use either Kingston or Crucial to upgrade them.

The only RAM brand I wouldn't bother trying in a Dell laptop or desktop is GEIL. I spent an hour in a PLE store last year trying different Geil sticks (4GB, 8GB, 16GB, they were out of Kingston) in 2 Dell latitude systems (Latitude 5480, 7270) , but none would POST ok.

Other brands such as Corsair will work ok too, but you don't need fancy RAM on a Dell system as they don't overclock. Also space within some OEM system is limited so larger heatsinks can causes issues, so best stick with the standard sticks.

            • @xuqi: Thanks so much for the detailed reply, it was very helpful.

So my best bet would be crucial or kingston right? Sounds great,

            • @xuqi: Is it ok if I try to upgrade the both RAMs in terms of the speed? Lets say I want to get rid of the current one (2400MHz) and replace it with a new pair of 3000Mhz?

              Thank you so much!

              • @kceady: Generally speaking Dell systems will only run RAM at the Intel spec (2666MHz for your 8th gen Intel CPU's), so installing faster RAM won't necessarily mean the Dell system will run it at 3000MHz.

If you already have 1x 8GB 2400 the easiest / cheapest option would be to add another, doubling your RAM to 16GB, with some additional performance improvement gained by going from single channel to dual-channel config (2x identical modules). Check manual/motherbaord RAM slot markings to ensure you install the 2nd stick in the correct 2nd channel slot.

                • @xuqi: Thank you for your quick response with details.

I believe that the mobo has 4 slots for the RAMs. I definitely will upgrade my RAM limit from 8gb to 16gb as I feel that the memory is always not enough.

I will purchase a Crucial one and let you know if it works well.

  • Ramcity.com.au has a selector where you can put in your make and model and will list all their ram that will fit your computer.

I have even done it for you, follow link to see what they have

Not cheapest I know, but they do guarantee it will work in your system. But you can probably then just do a search on the ram that comes back and buy elsewhere.
