Do I Need a Passport for Domestic Flights? (Melbourne to Queensland)

Hi Everyone.

Something has come up and I need to travel to Queensland in 2 days. The question is, do I need a passport for domestic flights? For example, Melbourne to Queensland. I currently don’t have a non-expired passport, but looking around online, say you can use your driver’s licence. Is this true?

Also is $185 the cheapest deal I can get travelling from MEL to QLD from the 16th to 22nd Thanks.

    License is fine

    • Thank you.

      [Edit]
Just to Confirm Learners License should not affect anything right?

      • Yes. As long as it's valid. Only need passport if leaving the country.

Passport is not needed. You just need photo ID such as a drivers licence.

As to the flights, where in QLD are you going - it's a big state. Brisbane? Townsville? Cairns? Gold Coast?

    • Thanks. Not sure where I'm going at the moment, will find out soon.

Use http://www.skyscanner.com.au to check for the cheapest flight price.

    • Thanks looks like $185 is the cheapest at the moment.

If you don't know where you are going, how do you know the cheapest airfare? 🤔

While recently it has been discussed that we should have a 'QLDxit' - Currently there is no need for a passport to go there. But you can use one as a form of identification if you have nothing else

    • Thanks

    • it is going to be: Redneckistan. A bundle of small bank notes for bribes will see you thru!

Just make sure to turn your watch back 10 years before you land

    • 10 years ago Labor were in power federally.

Don't forget about currency exchange too.

They always try to to rip you off in Brisbane, so do it in Melbourne before boarding.

    • +4

Yeah I hear that the currency of ACD (Adani Coal Dollars) is fairly hot right now.

I just flew Brisbane to Melbourne last week via Jetstar.

I checked-in online and only had carry on luggage - my ID was NEVER checked. Same for the return flight.

    • +1

This is very normal, but they can refuse to carry you if they ask for I’d and you have none.

      • +1

Yeah agreed, I always have a DL on me, but never needed it for a domestic flight.

  • +3

I don't think I've ever been asked for ID on domestic flights in the 9 years I have lived in Australia, and I fly minimum of once a month domestically.

    • +1

I get asked at the check-in counter when doing bag drop (Virgin)

      • Almost all of my flights are with Virgin, and I usually have check-in luggage. They just scan my online check-in boarding pass and take the bags.

        • I have a boarding pass when at the counter from online check-in, but they still ask to see my ID rather than my boarding pass

    • Same. I fly regularly. Only ever with carry on. Never been checked in years.

  • Self check-in at the kiosks or online beforehand. No id required at all.

  • The banana republic may want to see a passport

    • +1

Why are bananas more expensive in Qld than in Melb? I refused to buy any when I was in Qld. Waited till I got back to Melb.

  • +3

Couldn't you have just googled this question already comes up in Jetstar, Qantas, Tiger, forums etc.

I did. I just wanted to make sure and see everyone's experience before booking the tickets and getting a rental car as well as a hotel.

      • It tells you on all the domestic carriers' websites what ID is required.

      • +1

You trust a bunch of strangers, who can say whatever they want, more than an airline, who has the final say and can be held accountable for incorrect advice?

        • -1

Well, it would be obvious if someone was providing misleading information. This is a forum after all.

          • +1

@No Username: If the first few comments said you needed a passport, would you have known it was obvious misleading info?

If yes - then no point in thread as you know the answer from a direct reliable source ie. Airline.

Believe in yourself and have confidence in your research. You don't need strangers to validate what you learn.

      • +2

Are you planning to drive a rental car on a learners permit?

Just to Confirm Learners License should not affect anything right?

      • +1

You can't rent a rental car on a Learner's Licence.

You only need a passport to go to Tasmania

    • +1

ACT as well. That border check point after is annoying.

  • Pretty sure you could use your expired passport, school I'd, expired drivers license…. Whatever. They just want to confirm that you have an id that looks like you and matches the name on the passport. In Perth, both vurgin and qantas are automated bag check, meaning unlikely you would need identification. I think it's like that in some Eastern states airports as well.

  • Might be on its way guys, noticed that everyone flying out of Hawaii a few weeks ago had to have a passport which seemed really odd because for most people they were only flying interstate back home to mainland USA. So would not be so sure that rules are not going to be changed in the near future if this is in fact some internation flight rule that USA has now put in place. But currently interstate Australia I have always had to I D with something and my QLD drivers licence has always been sufficient.

    • Countries are fairly autonomous for the most part when setting their own internal flight rules/standards, hence why you can carry liquids etc in Australia but not in US/UK, even if it's a domestic flight, and that's been in place for I think 15 years or more with no impact here. Australia and NZ are fairly relaxed compared to others from what I have seen. But international is completely different. I'd imagine for Hawaii US is cautious (total guess on my pary) because it's so isolated from the rest of the US, they maybe don't mind people entering there, but prevent them using an easy route to the mainland.

    • No offense, but you must have misunderstood. I can not believe that all the yanks would have an actual passport. I cruise a lot and many many yanks travel to the Caribbean on cruise ships without a passport. They seem to think getting a passport is too hard. Maybe most or all had a passport, but I’m sure that a other firm of id would have been accepted.

None needed….not even flying to Tasmania.
Always a good idea to carry photo of of some kind, drivers license or similar.
    Enjoy!

  • Just photo ID and most times they won't even all for one. I always wonder how do they even control that.

Travelling by air intestate is like taking a bus in the city at times.

  • Yes for Queensland you do!

    • Well, actually no if you voted for incumbent government last month

      • Which government?

  • +3

    This is a joke right??????????

    • No, I'm 18, live alone and have never traveled before

      • +2

Only when you go to the shire

      • +4

        No Username either

  • +1

You don’t need a passport while travelling in the mainland (ACT is the exception). If you go to Tasmania be prepared to bring it.

  • +1

Passport is needed . Also don’t forget to change your Australian dollar to Queensland dollar (AUD to QD). Joking! License is ok!

  • No, you don't need a passport. In Sydney or Melbourne, you don't even need an ID via kiok check-in sometimes.

But in some smaller city, the check-in will be much more restricter.
