Selling a Personalised Motorbike Plate

Hi peeps

Getting an unregistered motorbike which comes with a personalised plate, not my cuppa so will be getting a new plate in its place. The personalised plate however, might be of interest to some riders. I rang RMS however given that only RMS can sell plates I wasn't able to get any information out of them.

They told me that I can't keep both plates, so the personalised one will go into holding for $58/yr (NSW). Have seen a few people selling plates on eBay, once sold, it can be transferred to a "friend" upon paying an one time off fee.

Has anyone done this? Can I just sell it, get payment, and then do the transfer via RMS? Say the buyer is interstate, the plate can be shipped to them without my intervention as I obviously can't just go and pick it up (I assume)?

Any clarity on the matter would be great. Thanks!

  • Has anyone done this?

    Nope, but

They told me that I can't keep both plates

I'm not sure what that means … what happens if the old plates are lost/stolen, while the bike is unregistered?

so the personalised one will go into holding for $58/yr (NSW).

I assume they're not in a holding state at the moment? So someone else can come along, choose the same plate and have new plates produced? I think you might be over-valuing the physical plates. The cost in NSW is $95-$160 for a new motorcycle plate, depending on the style. How much do you think someone will pay for your plate?

    • From what I've read, if it's stolen then you need to report it, if any crime is commited etc they'll investigate accordingly.

Nah it's attached to the bike of the seller, never crossed my mind other than just changing it out for something else but now having seen prices here and there I'm second guessing it.

How much someone's willing to pay? It says "MRS46" in case you're wondering. When I first had the idea I hadn't dug deep enough yet.

What cha reckon? Or it's more trouble than what it's most probably worth aye.

  • If the vehicle/plate has been out of registration for more than 90 days, the plate has to be handed in and cannot be used. If the plate on the bike is still registered or within the 90 day period, you can transfer it or put it on hold.

I had a plate like this for a bike and let it lapse over winter. 4 months later I went in with the blue slip and the plate to register the bike with that plate, they said that I cannot use it and if I wanted to use it again, I would need to reapply for the combination. So I just took the plate and threw it in a draw at home. Figured I paid almost $500 for it, they were not getting it back for nothing. I could sell the plate, but it would be unable to be used to register a vehicle.

Another thing to note is, to be able to sell the plate and transfer it, the plates needs to be registered in your name. If the bike was sold to you unregistered and you didn’t transfer it to your name, you cannot sell the plates.

    • Cheers for that, in your example, even though you're not registering it again, it's still blocked from other people from registering it, until you do it from scratch again?

The rego has been out for almost 2yrs, reading everything I might just leave it, was a much cheaper plan on my not so wise head.

      • It’s still assigned to the last vehicle it was on for about another 6~12months. If you do a rego check, it will tell you if it’s still assigned or if it’s back into the wild. So, if it hasn’t been registered for 2 years, the plates will not be able to be transferred as they would be back in the pool.

You may be able to sell it as a “novelty plate” but if that person then uses it illegally, you could be partially responsible, but I don’t think you could sell it for transfer or re-registration…

  • Not sure about interstate, but in SA, the plates need to be transferred to the new owner. The new owner pays the government fees which are basically the issuing/registration fee for custom plates. They then make new plates that you're meant to use.

I'm assuming they've told you that you can't keep the existing plates based on the above. You'll receive new plates are part of the payment for transferring them.

    • RMS just told me that I can't hold a plate unless it's tied to a vehicle, or I can have them hold it, until I want to use/transfer, but will have to pay annual fee to maintain it.

  • +1
