Newly born baby's stuffs

hi

Our baby boy is due in couple of months so we are looking at buying a cot, pram/trolley, car seat/capsule … Does anyone know a place/shop/website for good baby's stuffs and at decent prices?

Cheers,

  • As a relatively recent parent, my main suggestion is don't go ballastic on that stuff.

The car seat and capsule will not last them long - try and borrow / hire for the capsule stage and then get a really good car seat only.

The kid won't care how trendy the stuff is, so save money with the less "designer-label" brands. The cot is important, but really they aren't in them very long (2 years max, ours refused after less than a year!).

I see people buying change tables, etc - total waste of money! Same with baby bath… a cheapy is fine because they'll be in a real bath pretty fast.

Anyway, that's my 2c but for buying, we just used Target and eBay.

  • toys r us i find have really good sales in the babies r us section! Cots start from about $199 on sale carseats bout $125 check out the online catalogues but they also have good clearence items instore usually :))

  • Toysrus are expensive with their regular prices, but they have 30% off their full priced cots atm (50% off their Bruin Cots but deal ends today)

I've got the cot where it can transform to a toddler bed. No use in getting the nice ones like Stokke, as it's a pita to buy linens as you would have to get their branded ones. I would suggest Target and baby stores in your area to check their specials for cots. I bought a change table that's as big as (I should have posted a similar question in this forum last year) but ikea have convertible ones (Hensvik) that is a cabinet/shelf with a change table attachment, so that has more long term use factor.

I'm not sure where ur located, but i got my car seat from Mybabywarehouse. Get a good car seat that goes from Birth to around 18kg. Then there is no need to get a capsule. I bought the Safe n Sound AHR Meridian Tilt and Adjust Convertible Car seat, but they now have a new Platinum version (even more padding) and we've been using it since bubba came home and he's very snug in it.

As Ilama has said, don't bother getttng a baby bath. If your kitchen sink/laundry sink is large enough, wash baby in that (even in a large bucket similar to this http://www.babybucket.com/)

As for prams, it's don't need a bassinet as they grow out of it quickly. Just like the car seats, get one that can lie flat (so from birth +) and if you want, the seat can be reversed (so baby is facing you, though this is personal preference)

Sorry for the essay, but i wish someone told me this kinda stuff before i went crazy buying items for baby (as none of our friends/close relos had kids)

  • Many thanks for all the advice. We only just started going around to Target/Toy R us and it's kinda overwhelming really. So many things to think about and research on.

I am in Matraville so Bankstown is perhaps the closest place to us where we can find Babywarehouse and Toy r us stores. Looks like we be heading there this long weekend.

  • haha im in maroubra lol!! Yeh bankstown since since toys r us Moore Park is still closed! But Target have a few good things onsale at Eastgardens bouncer etc:)

  • Try www.babymore.com.au, they have good baby bibs, skin care products, cloth nappies and etc.

  • EBAY. I have bought, and then sold again, lots of baby stuff on ebay. Especially clothes and toys. Our pram and car seat were given to us by friends whose daughter no longer needed them. Alsogot a cot and drawers on ebay, and just purchased a new matress for the cot to be on the safe side. If you are buying things like car seat/pram on ebay, just make sure you're not getting anything excessively old, as safety standards have generally improved over the years.

    Enjoy the adventure.

The risk with buying used car seats from Ebay or anywhere else is that you have no way of being sure they haven't been involved in an accident. It may LOOK fine, but the seat's structural integrity may be compromised. Some very good seats are available of late at very reasonable prices. For instance, Infasecure Neon available only at BiGW, currently getting rave reviews, is only around the $150 mark. It has higher height markers than most other seats that will rear-face, meaning you'll be able to keep your son rear-facing for longer. They are much safer rear-facing in the event of a collision. Avoid Mothers Choice, as they are very short, and you'll be having to replace it much earlier than most other seats.

When you do go to a store to buy a seat, be sure to check the date of manufacture on the seat - it is not recommended to use a seat beyond 10 years of manufacture (the plastic can deteriorate.) I'd highly recommend making sure you get one that is 2012 made, as new standards came into being this year.

Unless you're planning on putting baby straight into a cot, you could put off buying one straight away. Fantastic buys do come up on good cots from time-to-time on Ebay, and About twice a year Target sells their cots for half price, and the innerspring mattresses for about $75.

If you're tall, check prams for comfort with the height of the handles, as you'll get very uncomfortable having to stoop to push a pram that is too short.
