Somewhat fashionable shoes for racking up the kms walking through European streets

Hey gang

I have some amazing hiking boots (Scarpa - can't recommend enough), but I want some low-key joggers or something that I can walk 10kms in a day in Europe and not have dead feet. My only joggers right now are some shit Nikes that I got for the gym, or my actual running shoes which aren't really meant for walking/I don't want to waste their kms on walking.

I had a look at the Vans UltraRange but they were too narrow for me. New Balance fit too narrow as well. I don't have the world's widest foot but it's definitely not narrow.

Specs:

  • wide(r) fit
  • black+white or at least subdued/natural colours
  • no New Balance or Vans
  • super comfy for long walks through city streets

    skechers.

    • I don't think I'm old enough to pull off Skechers casually ;) I had some for work once and they didn't actually last all that long so I'm not sold on their durability either…

Jeez, I have wide feet and new balance seems to always fit the best out of any of the majors!

Maybe try some Rockports out - they've got ones that can double as formal shoes, but feel like a sneaker when you wear them. Careful on the base of some of them as they don't exactly put great treads on the bottom by default. I've had a pair for ten years that have been resoled three times now.

    • Oh, really? Hmm. I've only had one pair of NBs and they were FAR too narrow, so my thoughts have been tainted. I'll try another pair on maybe.

I'll check out some Rockports, cheers!

      • You'll find many New Balance models have 2E or 4E width available. There's always that New Balance 624 if you are looking for that low-key dad-shoes look but great for walking around.

  • Can recommend the Nike Men's Revolution 4 - good comfy - I would get 1 size bigger for wide feet.

    • Thanks I'll check em out!

  • I buy $5 kmart canvas shoes and some inexpensive inner-soles and they always go the distance.

the best inner-soles I bought were from the 100 yen shop/ daiso.

I always glue the inner-soles in.

I walk a lot when overseas.

plus plain black is minimalist. also they are disposable (for $5). and they are light weight.

it's what I wore through europe, japan x3, US x 2, cambodia, India, vietnam, malaysia x 3, HK, singapore x3, Middle East, Cambodia, China,

Look man maybe I've been sold the dream by Big Shoes, but I really think walking around in $5 Kmart shoes is going to be bad for your feet/back/body in general in the long run even if you feel as if it's comfortable now. Or at least, it would be bad for me. Thanks for commenting though, and I'm extremely jealous of your travels!

  • Trail runners.

You're there as a tourist. The last thing you need is wet socks from foam soles and absorbent materials, or a slip on old cobbled roads.

You're not going to be in Australia where everyone expects to be in complete absence of precarious conditions.

This is a rather odd comment… I'm not going adventuring, I'm walking through city streets. Sounds like a complete absence of precarious conditions to me? I'm an experienced hiker, I'm fairly decent at negotiating precarious conditions anyway, don't stress.

      • I've travelled a bit and I've noticed the way the Scandinavian backpacking travelers dress - All weather clothing.

It just makes sense. They cannot afford having wet socks or damp clothes should there be a puddle or some rain.

And it never hurts to have traction.

Sure, but I'm going to the Mediterranean in summer - it's going to be dry, and it's going to be paved. If it's not dry, I'm not going to be far from a hotel. I don't really mind getting wet anyway. I have a raincoat!

          • @[Deactivated]: Did not know that but now I do.

Seems like anything will do the job.

Dr martens? Perfect for streets and cities and the occasional off-road adventure.

You may want to try these for yourself. Bought these recently and they’re marketed as urban travel shoes. They felt nice at the store but haven’t had the chance to break them in yet.
Maybe someone else here can share their 2c on these shoes?

  • Ecco are perfect for walking around the EU.

I use my good old Australian thongs to walk 10-15km through cities while on holidays. Starting the next RTW trip in 5 days with those bad bois set to be my main transport.

You sir are a maniac! Nah, more power to ya but I think my feet would be absolutely cooked if I walked all day every day in regular thongs!

      • Yeah I don't think it would help your foot at all, health wise haha

If you see the next few weeks an Aussie with thongs walking in, Tokyo, Bergen, Paris, Grindelwald, Edinburgh, Isle of Skye or NYC good chance it will be me :P

        • You're going to all those places in the next few weeks?!?!?! Get (profanity)!!!! (in the nicest way possible!)

@[Deactivated]: Yeah, turned in our points from CC churning and going RTW. I even asked Scotty for an Ozb T-Shirt to wear on the plane to represent haha

            • @knobbs: Far out mate, good on you. Enjoy it and make lots of memories!!!

  • Any shoes you normally wear.

    • I don't normally wear a suitable shoe. I have work shoes (dress shoes/boots), a pair of runners that I would like to preserve for running, soccer boots, thongs, and hiking boots. I have one pair of Nikes that are 'general use' but I wouldn't walk more than a km in them as they're not very comfortable.

      • If i'm doing a lot of walking i tend to wear a running shoe. I walked the Myrdal to Flam hike in norway just in an adidas running shoe. Then again, i can walk all day in vans without a problem.

  • Have always found Colorado good for exactly this.

  • Currently wandering through the cobble stones in Belgium and we are wearing our sandals. My current ones are Geox, who make nice wide Sandals. It has been raining, and a touch cold, but the Sandals are pretty good at drying out and you don’t end up with soggy socks. We are, averaging, about 11kms per day. Just climbed the Bruges tower in them and we’ve also walked Antwerp, Ghent and Brussels. At home I wear Keens walking shoes, and they are pretty good, but I didn’t want anything too heavy for travel. We are off to Amsterdam, Paris, Spain and Portugal after that, the Sandals should be pretty good there. I’ve also brought a pair of Saucony sneakers and they seem to be travelling pretty good as well. Enjoy.

  • Adidas deerupt runners, very comfy to walk around.Get it from DFO when adidas has extra 50% off so it's only $60.

  • Anything adidas with ultra-boost have been the most comfortable soles i've had. Would run you about $100-150

Just done a month in Europe walking average of 16 clicks a day. Wore Keen walking shoes. Anyone who thinks that the Mediterranean is paved with smooth streets has obviously never been. Keen shoes are lighter than my dress shoes.

For feet wider than standard that can be walked in easily 15+km a day try NB (680, 860, 940, 670 depending on whether you have overpronation or not)(624 or 857 if you need leather shoes), Brooks (Dyad, Beast, Addiction), Mizuno (Wave Rider) or Saucony (Echelon, Omni) or trail versions of shoes from these four brands.
All of these shoes come in wider fittings (2E, 4E, and the 857 even in 6E).
