I've had my heart set on the Huawei Mate 20 X since it arrived last year but I didn't want to pay the $1100+ price tag. Yes I know, Huawei are in a world of pain right now, I personally feel it'll sort itself out but regardless, they make great phones and meet the criteria I am concerned about. I think the only thing that has changed is the true value of a Huawei phone right now, has lowered. These phones are still $900, the Mate 20 Pro is approaching $800 but I don't like the Mate 20 Pro. I feel the real value is about $650, but will it get there before a newer phone makes more sense? My budget, around $800.
What's important to me is:
- Excellent camera, specifically still shots and I need optical zoom, and I like wide angle
- Size, I like large phones say 6.4" or larger (the giant size of the Mate 20 X appeals to me)
- Battery, I travel a lot so the 5000 mAh really appeals
The Samsung Galaxy Note 9 comes close, better video modes but the still shots don't quite meet my needs. The Samsung Galaxy S10e comes close too but is physically too small and the S10 / S10+ are going over budget.
Other options like the Huawei P30 lite (camera is average and no NFC is a deal breaker), and the Huawei Mate 20 I ruled out earlier, can't remember the reason. The Oppo Reno comes very close, it's in budget, has even greater zoom than the Huawei Mate 20 series and could possibly be the phone to get.
But what other options am I missing? So far I think it's between the Huawei Mate 20 X and Oppo Reno. I'm also open to second hand Huawei Mate 20 X for anyone wanting to jump off the Huawei train.
