Harvey Norman AEG Laundry Appliance Promo - Is This a Good Deal?

Hi Guys,

Just need some help here after going to Harvey Norman yesterday. The sales guy told us about a special they're running on AEG washing machines and dryers and I'm interested to know what you guys think about this deal and whether it's a good one. I've never heard too much of this brand before but their appliances do look pretty good.

I'm interested in this 10kg front-loading washing machine at $1999 - Model LF8C1612A https://www.harveynorman.com.au/aeg-10kg-front-load-washing-…
And also this 8kg dryer at $1599 - Model T8DHE842B https://www.harveynorman.com.au/aeg-8kg-heat-pump-dryer-with…

Currently they're running 20% off if you purchase both a washing machine + dryer together so that brings it down to $2878.40. Also throwing in a free Stacking Kit valued at $149. Free delivery and installation included too.

The issue is I'm waiting for my new place to be built and said I don't need it for another 8-10 months. The sales consultant said I can put a 30% deposit to secure the deal and when my place is ready next year I pay the remaining balance.
So I was thinking to use my 2 AmEx cash back offers (spend $350, get $50 back) to pay the deposit which gets me another $100 off the total price. I guess another benefit is that if AmEx runs another cash back offer with HM in the next 8 months I can use that as well (noting they've had offers for the last 2 Christmases)

Question 1: Anyone ever heard of this deposit scheme to hold an item with HM for a long period described above and is it legit?
Question 2: What do you guys think of my method of payment to get the price down as low as possible with extra savings, and is it a good deal?
Question 3: Does anyone have any experience with AEG appliances and what are your thoughts on them? Reviews seem pretty good online.

Thanks in advance and appreciate any comments/feedback.

What is the buy date for warranty purposes.
Is it date of actual delivery?

    • Good question, I'll ask but it should be otherwise there's no point. Their warranty period is 5 years

We had an all-in-one washing machine and heat-pump dryer bought in 2015 or 2016. Dryer died after two and a half years and could not be repaired. Washing machine is still working. I was not impressed given the ridiculous prices charged, and I would not buy AEG again, especially not an all in one machine/dryer combo. I realise you are looking at separate dryer and washer, so perhaps you'll have better luck.

P.S. Our unit was made in Italy. I suspect that has something to do with the early failure.

    • Aeg has a 60 month warranty. Did you use it?

    • thanks for your feedback on this one. I don't see any AEG 2-1's on the market currently though. looks like they might have known the issue and stopped producing them for good.

I guarantee that when you go to pick it up they'll have sold it and the current models will be more expensive. This sound like a huge risk. Either buy it and take it now or don't buy anything till you're ready. This is just going to a pain in the arse. The salesperson will feed you whatever crap he thinks you want to hear.

    • Point taken, definitely. thanks for your input, think you helped made up my mind already!

We bought an AEG dryer as it had a five year warranty. At year 4 it was making some annoying noises and the belt died. Fixed up cheerfully. Also then control panel kept fogging up which made it randomly press buttons. Took a few service calls and various part replacements but they could not solve it.

The lady in warranty service just said hey pick any model from this list and we will ship and install. Which they did.

It had pretty hard labour too.

Thanks very much, think probably with all the comments and feedback received to hold off on the purchase. The warranty / service does seem pretty good though as they replace with a brand new one. Maybe I'll start researching other brands like LG/Samsung/Miele instead!

Look at Miele. Bought a brand new pair 7 years ago and have been faultless. They manufacturer their own parts, they do not outsource for any of them. Unique among the industry. I wouldn't consider anything but an Asko or Miele. Asko has gotten their game back on track, as for a few years after Gorenje bought them, quality suffered after being built in Slovenia vs Sweden. Made a difference but they've seen to got it under control.
One major factor for me is what the machines are made from. As I recall only Miele and Asko use twin stainless steel drums, everyone else uses plastic including AEG, Bosch, the Koreans, even V Zug. When Miele switched to their new design the first year or two created some more problems than they anticipated, but again teething problems and they have got their quality under control. Obviously luck of the draw, sometimes you'll get a lemon, can't be helped, but we've found Miele extremely accomdating with after sales service. You can get the MSC (Miele Service Cerrificates) for an extra $249 per appliance which covers you fully for 5 years on each appliance. Granted it adds some to the bottom line, but it's some peace of mind. Also check out their B stock centres, Rosehill if in Sydney. You can often get some pairs have half the price due to a small dent on the side, or that it's been used in their showrooms. But they carry a full warranty from delivery date, not purchase date. So if you found a deal now, you could pay the deposit to Miele and when you are ready, pay the rest and organise delivery. Ours were the last of the classic design, top end, heat pump dryer, and have been faultless with almost daily, if not multiple daily usage. The only item either has needed were drum brushes on the dryer, as we use it at times multiple times a day. It's a wear and tear item, but Miele having excellent after sales support, fixed it under warranty (would have been approx $225 all up had it been out of warranty. Plus the Miele guy always checks everything else while here, fridges, freezers, dishwasher, coffee machine to make sure all is well. Couldn't be happier. But again this is only my experience, but they do have a very high loyalty rate.
As far as Asko, they are very good as well. Seem to be more about efficiency than all else, but they seem to be now decent machines built with great materials. I wouldn't buy anything other than those two. Hope it helps you decide a bit more. But I'd avoid AEG. Truly overpriced for what they are. They are feature laden, but build quality and parts used aren't nearly up to some others standards.
        Cheers

        • Hey thanks for this. Very informative and much appreciated advice!

Had a Miele washer and control board & motor were replaced within 2 years. 6 yearrs after that broke down again & cheaper to buy a new washer than repair it.

These premium brands are no longer premium. The parts all come from China & is assembled in Germany for marketing purposes.

Just buy a bosch or F&P. At least when it breaks down outside of warranty you can't be too disappointed

    • Thanks for your advice. Decided to just hold off now and wait for a great deal next year when the new place is finally ready. No point getting it now

  • What did you eventually end up buying ?

    • Ended up getting the Bosch idos and series 8 dryer some time last year!
