This modem isnt anything like the vodafone one it doesnt have a screen only leds that light up to tell you if its on etc.. The Vodafone one is a newer model and can be unlocked to work on optus anyway
Gstfree, the virgin model modem is the older wifi modem, the vodafone model has the OLED display to show information such as signal strenght and data etc rather than logging into the browser to read the info, the two modems have the similar spec, such as modes, HSUPA and HSDPA. The vodafone is a lower price and can be unlocked free, the screen with the information on the device is a very usefull feature.
Can I access a wifi printer on my laptop through this modem? (I suck at this kind of thing if this question hasn't made that clear)
i don't think so, unless your printer has remote access or something

Yes you do need an intermediary device, unless you set up an ad-hoc network.
And these wifi gadgets will do the job the same as a regular wifi/router.
I ahve the voda one, and I think the virgin one is similar.
I believe a better option is to run a wifi hotspot from an entry level smart phone. keeps accounts simple and ultimately will be better value.
Huh. How is that more value? What kind of "entry level" handsets for example and how much to buy it upfront? And how long before the handset gives up on being a hotspot for you lol.
Is the huawei 8150 still selling for $99? That would be one of the cheapest one with wifi hotspot I could think of. That would still be double this price though lol
Im sorry but you cannot compare the difference between the two. The fact that these things are an actual router make them so much quicker. Ive used a iPhone over bluetooth and a Samsung Galaxy s over Wifi tethering and i can tell you a proper wifi router craps all over them, even using the exact same sim! Its so much faster with the router as the PC can understand it better when it comes to assigning IP addresses etc. Thats my personal experience anyways. Each to their own

In my case vodafail wins hands down, my virgin/optus is crap. but for other people it is the reverse. Differs from location to location.Aldi is doing the Telstra hotspot for $79 for 5gb next week. There is ozbargin link somewhere for that
