Meh. Get a pressure cooker. Does more and makes better rice.
Filipino.
Eats rice with EVERY meal.
Methods i've used:
Stovetop - cheapest/neatest option, no need for extra equipment. This is what I do most of the time. Great for small batches. Takes skill (of sorts)because pot has to be watched which can be a pain. tip: stir the rice a bit when the water starts boiling.
$15 kmart Rice cooker - cheap, easy to use (just turn it on!) does a fairly decent job. Often with unevenly cooked rice because of the thin pot, and uneven heat source. comes in different sizes, fairly light and can easily be moved around. tip: stir the rice a bit when the water starts boiling.
$150 Taiwanese rice cooker (indirect) - Does a much better job than the $15 one. Prefer this over the Japanese ones because they can make bigger batches although tend to be uneven towards the top. TAKES AGES to cook though. Good sized machines. Easy to move around. This is best product to price point.
$300-400 Japanese rice cookers (what we have here) - cooks very evenly, although TAKES AGES. Bigger machines, but makes only small amounts of rice. Not so easy to move around as well. Might need a dedicated space. TOO EXPENSIVE because although it is better than the $15, it's only marginally better if you take price as consideration.
$100-200 electric pressure cooker - Cooks fast enough. VERY EVEN rice. Turns off the heat after the timer so it never scorches the bottom. It's NOT JUST A RICE COOKER, so for small spaces (even though the machines are huge), they're great because they do a lot of things (like beans!) THIS is my favorite.
and just for the heck of it..
$10,000 - $40,000 commercial steam combi ovens (yes they cost THAT much). cooks rice through steam so they'll NEVER scorch. Can prepare up to 30kg (50kg cooked) at a time, all even, in trays, minimal fussing about. WIll also always finish at the expected time it's supposed to finish (different brands have different cook times but they're all around 35 minutes) this is my second fvorite.
