Telstra have their 4GX wi-fi Pro for $69 which is $50 off (it is the Huawei E5787Ph-67a for those interested).

There is currently activation bonus so you get 30gb with the modem (valid for 30 days activated by 8 July).

Modem will be locked to Telstra - looks like unlocking fee after 6 months is $25 (not sure what it is before 6 months).

  • I don’t know much about these modems so excuse my ignorance. But can I put my phone SIM card in it to use all the data I have on my phone?

    • Yes, but it's locked to Telstra sim only. It's basically a Mobile-4G to HotSpot-WiFi creator.

      • Thanks I’m with Telstra. I hotspot off my phone but it drains my battery, so was thinking this could be a good option.

        • You won't be able to make/receive calls…

        • i also use modems so i don’t drain the battery of my phone …..
phone batteries are expensive to replace and their charge holding does deteriorate, so i’d rather extend the life of my phone and let the modem battery take the pounding.

      • Would there be an advantage to using this over just using a phone hotspot? And do you know if it would work with an Aldi pre-paid sim? I think Aldi uses the Telstra network.

        • Unlikely

Pretty sure that is only allowed on prepaid sims…

      This is to answer UnderclearedFreaks
      Question.

It will be in your contract with Telstra.
Plenty of posts on Whirlpool stating no pospaid sims to be used in modems…

      • I’m prepaid :)

      • I tried searching Whirlpool but didn't find much info on postpaid sim in this device. Can you Please PM me with link?

Note that finding third party unlocking service for this modem is very difficult.

    • Have you tried dc-unlocker?

I feel with 5G coming up it’s a poor time to buy a 4G wifi hotspot. 5G phones aren’t good yet but hotspots don’t have the same constraints and are already able to take advantage of the technology. Better to get one of them

… If my experience with Tel$tra's 4G rollout, it won't be universally immediate, it will be congested around those 5g areas where it is rolled out, and it will suck up your data allowance like a super-duper turbo-charged vacuum cleaner on steroids. You may as well use 4G in the meantime… it really is more than fast enough for most peoples needs (subject to reception).

I have had one of these units for about 4 years and you do need to be very careful when switching off as they can drain your data allowance and the battery recharge (of this device, not your phone) very quickly if you don't power down properly. Not the most positive power button in my experience.

Else, they are fantastic when travelling, data can be topped up quickly online, it can service up to 10 devices off the one connection (dependent upon signal strength).

      • Yep I tested 5G at the Telstra store on Galaxy S10 5G and got 15Mbps…

It's only cat4 according to specs, negging as cat4 modems are massively cheaper elsewhere…

(Understand this one looks better, but most would be buying because they don't know it's only cat 4)

Edit:. To clarify further, cat 4 LTE = 150mbps.
No different to the $29.50 Telstra wifi modems as far as speed and what-not goes. Looks cooler, has a screen… But is that worth $30 extra?

This review says its LTE Cat 6
      States DL 300Mbps/UL 50Mbps

      • Yeah it's CAT 6, I still have an old e5786 the previous model and that's CAT 6.

Works well with cheap Kogan Sims as it does CA on 1800Mhz frequency, so getting relatively good speeds.

        • +1

Revoked neg in light of this, if it's cat 6 that's not bad.

      • Specs on Telstra site say cat4?

  • It's a Huawei telecommunications product. Careful, Uncle Donnie says they spy on you.

Its quite funny how everybody is making it such a big deal around Huawei's alleged spying. However the US and other countries have done it for years. For example, Edward Snowden.

Basically if you don't want to be spy'd on then you should live in a cave and turn off anything that is electrical. Go back to the old times of candles and horses. If you don't want to, then accept that there is always a possibility that somebody is watching you.

The USA now wants to extradite you

    • oh. Sounds exactly like what Google does then. Like it knows where you been and what you been doing every second of the day.

This makes it acceptable (I suppose if you are right into politics which are run by some really dumb people) since Google is from the West while Huawei is from where, exactly? From some alien world?

      • terms and condition on android say you accept tracking, even with location services turned off they state you can be tracked by radio tower locations.

apples new sign will be interesting as it effectively becomes a proxy with randomized id when you access sites, except for the cost of an iphone.

    • I wonder what ANU was using when China hacked them.

  • Would this work with an Aldi sim (given it runs off the Telstra network)?

    • Likely no.

  • Will this work with the sim from my iPad or iPhone? I’ve noticed that Telstra has capped the speed when you tether from your mobile device which is bloody annoying. Hopefully this gets around it?

    • Bit of resistance bec online only but OW reluctantly agreed
      Nice one

      • +2

I hate when they stuff people around like that. It's clearly written in their price beat guarantee:

"Our Price Beat Guarantee includes products you find online - as long as the item is identical and in stock. When assessing the PBG from online stores we also take into account the added cost of delivery to your location (if any)."

  • Annoyingly it is $80 and 7-10 days to unlock via specific IMEI number through Telstra Tech Support
USD $16 to unlock using online service - I haven't tested

  • With the bonus data, it's not bad I guess.
