Free Emulators for Android-Currently Free on The SlideMe App Store (2 Weeks)

480

Modplease read through the comments and related articles on the situation why yongzh's emulators were pulled from Android Market. It might be related to the violation of license terms, although nothing is confirmed. It might also disappear from SlideMe under the same reason. —scotty

yongzh's popular emulators for android are currently free on the SlideME app store. They'll be free for approximately 2 weeks. Inlcudes Nesoid, SNesoid, Gensoid, GBCoid, Gearoid, GameBoid and Ataroid.

N64oid is now also free.

For those who don't know, Google has completely banished emulators from the official Android Market (possibly due to Sony Xperia Play's influence) due to copyright infringement.

There are also rumours of YongZh apparently ripping off open-source code and integrating it into his own apps (in other words, he's making money out of stuff that should've been open source to begin with)

This is why i hadn't bought them previously, but for free I am happy to :)

should we be encouring others to get them? its kinda bad form if what is being said is true.

we shouldn't be giving him cred for something he's not giving to others.

actually emulators like fpse are still on the market. i think yongzh and zodttd's stuff were taken off because of the gpl license violation

    • +2

What kermuffle said. You can still find emulators on Android Market. Those who got pulled were in violation of license, where they did not contribute back nor credit the open source projects they based their applications on.

Boo. This guy should be facing charges for the crap he's pulled. Deserved to make nothing for his N64oid project.

He's basically taken an open sourced working GPL'd application from the Pandora (after they've managed to get it working under Android), removed ALL credits of original authors, rebadged it, recompiled it, and tried to make some money from it. Which is why it was removed the first time and it appears he has now re-added it (not sure if he's released source, but I can't find it).

Worst bit is, you Android lackeys who think your running open source fair software have lapped it up and made the guy 10's of thousands of dollars.

Feel free to use his applications, but please don't pay for them… he deserves no credit for the hour and fifteen minutes he spent 'find and replacing' the credits.

Also if anyone out there knows a good lawyer who'll fight for GPL, they could stand to make a couple of very easy bucks.

What's even funnier is the application has been available for my phone (N900 running Maemo), open sourced, for over a year now. Got to love a truly powerful linux platform. And it had more features: Multiple PS3 controllers + Wiimotes + USB controllers + accelerometer etc etc.

EDIT: I was beaten it seems, glad to hear others at least know of this.

So, is it still just rumour or proven?

      • +3

        That they stole the code?

Yeah its easily proven. I've personally had a look inside the executable and it's pretty much identical to the mupen64plus emulator available for the Pandora. Have a read here:

        http://www.gp32x.com/board/index.php?/topic/58889-n64-for-an…

And read the rest of the thread if you can be bothered.

Snesoid (or w/e it is called) is the same for Snes9x.

Thank you for the heads up

pfffft… sony Xperia should be going downhill after that PSN incident!

how can i download it into my phone?

    • +2

If you have a barcode scanner you can just scan the barcode on the site with your phone and it will directly download the apk. Otherwise you can go to the site from your phone.

        thx!

  • edit
    double post sorry

  • +2

For Snes emulation get Snes9x EX, 100% free and no ads. YongZh has definitely breached GPL licensing and should not be supported for that.

    • +1

Just to set the record straight, Snes9x is not licensed under the GPL or any other open-source / free software licence. It's freely distributable in binary and source form, but only for non-commercial use, which makes it neither open source (as defined by OSI) nor free software (as defined by FSF).

He may have violated the GPL from one/more of the other emulator projects, but the Snes9x case definitely has nothing to do with GPL.

FPSE is pretty neat, if it works on andro 3.1 with a sixaxis connected that would be portable gaming nirvana

ok scratch that, handsets will get it soon so get your emulators ready,

Nice, thx for the heads up. Had the 'free' versions of SNes before, these work quite well.

  • Personally, I feel nothing but sympathy for anyone who's going to play N64 games on a touchscreen phone.

    • +1

Android tablet + WiimoteController app + Classic Controller attachment = WIN.

  • Anyone buy the N64 one?

    • I've tried but it keeps coming up and saying "Payment failed. 801". Not sure how to fix it either.

  • +1 great find!

  • Are there any other Nintendo 64 emulators available to download on the android market? I want to play Mariokart on my galaxy s!

    N64oid is now free!

    • OP or mod if you could stick that in the description too, that'd be handy.

Not really too keen on supporting this guy, but hey, they're free for now at least.

      • I made it as a new deal last night, but it was pulled down saying it was a duplicate and too much commenting on pirating (roms). I think most people wont even know about N64oid being free now as this bargain is no longer on the first page and it isnt really stated in the title.. nor the description. Thats why i thought creating a new "deal" was appropriate.

Sorry I did try to update it a couple of days ago but it gave me an error. Have done it now though.
