Education Support Class - Victoria

Just looking for information regarding work for the Department of Education in Victoria.

I'm currently working as a casual relief teacher (I used to work full-time but decided CRT was better for me). I'm thinking about a career change but still within education. I love IT and technology and would like to work in an IT department in a school. This type of IT work is classified under Education Support Class.

Can anyone working in Education Support Class or in IT in a school give me an idea of what it's like? Do you still get holidays/payed for holidays?

Thanks

Obviously can’t be that busy at work then ;)

      • haha like the sarcasm but you're not too wrong. That's why I'm switching schools as I've been here too long now.

  • Tried PM but you don't accept any new ones.
Most schools have 2 kinds of IT people - ST Technican's who are supplied to them through the department and contracting companies.
What you are looking at is being a Local Technician which you are classed as an ESS. The school will employee you as a staff member and you will handle all IT etc.
The school pays you same as all other staff. Depending on what kind of role as the IT person you got depends on holidays etc.
I am a local IT Tech and get the full holidays off but still payed (pay is spread out).
My boss is the IT manager but not employed as ESS - is something different and he doesn't get holidays off. Can take some off but has to negotiate with prin etc.

So for what you would most likely be going as you would get the holidays off and after 7 years entitled to Annual leave etc. Pay is determined by the level you're at. The longer you stay around the more you will get.

In terms of out the job is in general - it all depends on the individual school instance. Some schools will really want to have the latest IT tech and spend the money so you will have lots to maintain etc. Some will want it but not spend the money so you spend a lot of time trying to cobblee stuff to work.

Others will not care about it at all so you will do minimal work - basically helpdesk - reset passwords etc.

    • Thanks for the insight!

Can you give me an idea of the day=to-day tasks? What are your hours?

      • The basic stuff is like reset passwords for staff emails, repair staff laptops (basic stuff and hardware repairs log for another tech to replace parts, repair desktops/iPads/tablets/Apple TVs,Chrome casts/whatever staff etc that are used in classrooms, maintain servers - backups, file storage, dns, AD etc

Then more sort of advanced stuff like networking, cabling, waps etc - infrastructure things when you have down time off other things working.

My hours are from 8:40 to 4:30. I usually get in early at 7:30 though and some times stay late. Some things are hard to do in rooms when kids and students are around.
