Portable Bluetooth Speaker - for Talkback Radio (Don't Want Heavy Bass)

I listen to a lot of talkback radio shows and sports broadcasts from radio apps on my phone. As speaker quality on phones is generally not great I was wanting something a little better quality, slightly louder and waterproof so I can listen in the shower. The problem is, having Autism I am sensitive to some noises and sounds (one is bass). I can't stand doof doof music or when regular radio is played on speakers with an overpowering/deep/heavy bass. I am not an audiophile - I do not know much about audio and the technical side of it.

I recently ordered a bluetooth speaker but as it was out of stock and discontinued they sent me a UE Wonderboom. I know the wonderboom has lots of great reviews but it wasn't for me. The bass was way to much, I had to return it. Listening to talkback radio, all I could focus on was the deep background effects of the bass. I have a digital radio that is not like this which I love the sound quality.

I take it that these tiny portable speakers are designed for music lovers, hence are bass heavy. I'm different to the crowd and looking for something to suit my needs. If there is anyone out there with a recommendation for a reasonable quality bluetooth speaker without the bass emphasis, please let me know. I don't know if what I'm looking for exists but any explanations, recommendations, ideas would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi,

I bought a JBL Clip and found it a solid quality unit.

As far as BT and waterproof, JBL has https://www.harveynorman.com.au/jbl-jr-pop-kids-portable-blu… so maybe look at that for $29.

I'm liking the Chance to Win a trip to Las Vegas with JBL as well. :+)

Cheers. My main focus is firstly finding one without the bass. I get sick of searching online as every one I see seems to say 'extra bass', 'new improved bass', 'hear/feel the bass' etc. I don't want that lol!! Most people want more bass but funnily enough I'm here wanting a lack of bass. How is the JBL clip in that regard?

JBL have moved on to the Clip 2 and 3 now.

I'm still happy with the Bass not being overboard on mine though.

I'd suggest you take your phone in to HN, explain your situation and see
if they can pair your Mobile up with something that works for you.

        • Ok, cheers. Might have to head in store and see what works. I originally didn't consider in-store as I wasn't sure they would have them on display to try. If not, even if they just gave me some advice that would be a start.

Change the eq settings of your phone? Use an app if necesaty.

Otherwise the cheapest brand will have the shittest bass 😉

    • I hadn't even thought of changing phone settings. Would that only change the output/how audio sounds on the phone or would it change the output of bt speaker as well?

I figured that, well they would have the shittest of everything wouldn't they?

Would a graphic equalizer app work with your radio app to reduce the bass?

    • I'm not sure, but its something I could look into. I haven't used one before although am sure I'd be able to try something like that.

Maybe one of these? Cheep cheep https://www.kogan.com/au/shop/audio/bluetooth-speakers/?q=so… (I know it's not waterproof, but at that price leave it near the shower and who cares if the humidity kills it with time).. and once you find the model that you like, buy a spare!

UE Boom and megaboom app has an equaliser. Pretty good for $100 range

I've got a small JBL GO (old gen) and I find it's great for podcasts etc. Gives the sound enough 'body' to make talking sound natural and not thin or tinny.

    • Cheers for that. I've actually been contemplating whether to give the JBL GO 2 a try. I'm wanting that voice clarity/natural sound as I do listen to a lot of podcasts and never any music - as long as that bass isn't too overpowering!
