Hyundai i30 with Paint Issues

I bought a Hyundai i30 approximately 2.5 years ago. About 6 months ago I started noticing a host of paint issues: paint peeling off one of the door handles, rust marks on the rear edge of the bonnet, paint peeling off the top of the rear bumper. There were also paint chips on the bonnet and passenger door. I contacted the dealership where we purchased the car and was told us that nothing could be done as the paint issues were our own fault. I contacted the Hyundai customer care line; the person who answered the call couldn't have been more disinterested and nothing came of that. I eventually managed, through the dealership, to have a Hyundai representative view the car - the representative supposedly visits each dealership once a month. This was scheduled for last week. I received a call the day before the visit to inform me that the representative was no longer coming. Hyundai don't seem to have any interest in resolving my case and I wish to know what advice my fellow Ozbargainers can share with me. The car itself is great mechanically but with paint issues this early on in the car's life, I hate to imagine what it will be like in years to come. Thanks in advance

  • Was the car new when you purchased it?

superficial damage to the paint-work or upholstery of a second-hand motor vehicle that would have been apparent on a reasonable inspection at the time of sale

  • Is it a red car? In any event that shouldn't really matter. Was it brought brand new? If it was second hand or demo it may have been resprayed and not been finished in enough clear coats. If you have maintained the car with normal and regular car washes you should be able to argue your case. Maybe take it to a smash repairers and see what they say and get a quote. Maybe its time to go to the ACCC or small claims.

The question is what do you want to get out of it? Would you be happy for them to re-paint it. As its not really a mechanical fault your unlikely to get a new car. They might buy it back at an agreed price. If its the later are you better off selling it yourself and just buying a new car.

Just some thoughts. Also some pictures may help for others to comment.

I wonder what the story from them would be if you paid for paint protection package

    • negligent via excessive sun exposure

Did you buy it new 2.5 years ago? Or did you buy a 2008 model i30 2.5 years ago? These little details are kind of important you’d think.

    Need some photos to judge

Please post some photo's of what you're referring to. Consider using https://imgur.com/ if looking for a place to post them.

  • Wonder if you had put sunscreen lotion on the car during the summer if you’d still have this problem?

  • I've experienced the same issue with my car (Mitsubishi). You'll have to do some work for them to fix the paint for you I think. I know people were trying to get a class action going online for the Mitsubishi paint issue, although I don't think anything ever eventuated from it.

  • As others are asking we need photos. I would prefer MS Paint though.

  • Thanks to all those who replied. Althougj have been following ozvafgain for a number of years. Im new to posting to the forum. Was expecting to recieve a notification when posts were made. Was shocked to see that my post had been commentted upon just now. Will get photos.

  • I think I've done it. Thanks to xuqi for suggesting the use of imgur. Never realised it was such a hassle to post attachments. The image link is https://imgur.com/a/XVbNRJ3. To answer the question posed by a few… the car was brand spanking new when it was purchased. One of the rust marks in the image is of the rear edge of the bonnet; directly across from it is another rust mark which tells me that the 2 marks are related. Could have happened during the manufacturing process when the bonnet shifted and touched the main body of the vehicle. There are no marks on the underside of the bonnet to indicate that movement has occurred since it left the showroom, i.e. no paint has been disturbed on the bolt holding the bonnet to the hinge nor is there any sign of an accident (which is true to this case anyway). Any suggestions on what angle to try next???????

  • I followed some of your advice and have filed a complaint with consumer affairs. Am hoping that this may lead somewhere.
