iPhone Upgrade - iPhone 7 Plus 32GB or Xr 64GB

Wife has an iPhone 6s plus 128G. At least 2-3 years old and still runs well, but light user anyway. No issues with battery evident and no replacement done on battery. Her mother wants to upgrade, but only wants to pay say $600. Her mum is going to use it lightly as well. Calls and just to get to know the use of the phone features.

JB have https://www.jbhifi.com.au/phones/Outright-Mobile-Handsets/ap…

5.5in screen home button and same look as 6s. Screen size important. So the thought is my wife upgrades to new phone and pass on old phone to her mum and she can upgrade to a new phone. With the 7 plus 32g we would need to fork out $199. Generally my wife does not upgrade phones and has her 4s for ages till I said that thing looks like a toy and she appreciates the larger real-estate as the main plus point.

Alternatively, I had been looking at the XR 64g

Mobileciti - $1057.75 delivered Aus Stock on ebay with ebayplus $457.75 change over.

6.1in screen and no home button. Would JB price match Mobileciti price with ebplus discount in VIC store. Mobileciti in NSW.

The idea of the swap between her mum and wife is that as the 7 and 6 will be similar phones. Wife can help mum with any questions about how to use it more easily. The Xr features seem different. Well no home button.

Everyones thoughts?

Wait and upgrade to iPhone XR 64g when cheaper

  • Go hard or go home mate

    • @epkh So go the XR. Is that what you are trying to say. That's what I am thinking. Although we will have to fork out more, but new model will last longer.

  • I don't think the 7 Plus is a big enough upgrade from a 6s plus so I'd say get the XR.
Did I read that right though? Are you saying you're going to sell your 6s Plus to your mother in law for $600?

    • Yeah I know. Her mum is happy to take the old phone for that price, so we can upgrade as she doesn't need the latest phone. I am only the messenger. If I had my choice it wouldn't be an Apple.;) It's used but still very good. 128g version.

  • +1

Rule of thumb when buying apple product: If you need to wait to get it cheaper, then don't buy Apple. If you think 7 plus is enough for your wife then go for it, iPhone XR price is not gonna go down significantly unless you are willing to wait 2 years from now.

    • Could get lucky with a 10% off deal at Mobilciti and TRS on top of that if you travel. The Xr isn't selling as well as it should be because let's be honest 1k for a budget phone is pushing the definition of 'budget'. Maybe we will see some decent Xr sales so it could pay to wait a while.

      • 10% off RRP is probably the best you could get for Apple and for TRS you need to travel overseas within 2 months of your purchase. iPhone XR is not a budget phone, it is the cheaper alternative of iPhone XS but not a budget phone at all.

No matter how good iPhone deals are it'll be nowhere near as good as other phone. Just look at the iphone 7 plus which still being sold for $799, that's for a 3 year old phone. So if you want to buy whe it drop to sub $800, you might need to wait about 2 years give or take.

  • As an aside, and this is not meant as any criticism for updating, the iPhone 6S and 6S+ just got a whole lot better as second-hand phones.
Apple has just guaranteed updates for both of them, so whatever comes after iOS 12 will work on the phones for, probably, the next 2 or 3 years. Anyone with a 6 or 6+ (or earlier) is going to be stuck, though some might want to stick with the iOS they have anyway.
The S Plus is the first iPhone with the A9 processor, and even if Apple says otherwise, replacing the display or battery is a snack, and not expensive. Drop a Samsung S8 and a new display runs a minimum of $220 (best not to ask how I know that).
I just got an immaculate 6S+ 128GB for under $300. Great camera, excellent display and Mrs B is never going to fill it up with… whatever the hell it is she fills phones up with. She has had an Android phone/iPad mismatch for a few years, so she will be a happy camper, once I sort of a new plug and lead, and the mandatory Kate Spade cover…
