Car Numberplate Forged(?) - I'm Copping The Fines

Apologies for the horribly worded title.

So I have two cars, one I rarely drive and one I use as a daily. Someone who has an identical car to the former, has forged the numberplate (I assume) and I've been copping a lot of parking fines in the mail. I have an alibi, majority of the fine, I was overseas, no one else had access to my car.

There are some differences between his car vs mine, i.e. mine having M-sport rims, his having standard. Plate number on his having VIC on the top, mine on the side.

Anyways, I went to the police today, they weren't really helpful. Though it's a bit of a hassle but I guess I'll have to go Vicroads to get numberplate changed to stop the fines, parking and toll road.

The cowboy in me wants to drive around to the areas where the parking fines were given (city) to find said car and confront driver, but it's probably not the smartest idea.

What are the chances this is a genuine accident?
What are my best options to proceed?

Been waiting for a juicy topic to post, fingers crossed it makes front page!

While at present it doesn't sound like you're having much fun, can you imagine finding their car, taking a photo of both cars and plates side by side, and sending that to vicroads? I'm pretty sure that would be hilarious. No need to actually confront them in person!

    • Yeah definitely. I'm leaning more towards what they're doing is on purpose because I'm getting unpaid fines rolling in everyday. My car is listed for sale online, rego is showing on there.

Yep. Exact same thing happened to my FIL when he listed his car online. Pain in the arse.

        • Damn. I hate when people do this sh*t and get away with it. Hence why me wanting to confront the bastard doing it. Ya reckon if I get ahold of them, realistically, what can the popo do to 'em?

@Tuftsdude: Don’t know what the law is. Would expect a fine at the minimum. You would hope they would try to go further down the chain to see if they made them or bought them, but realistically, the police may not have the resources to investigate.

            • @tomsco: Reckon forgery and fraud is a pretty big law to break.

@Tuftsdude: I would be careful of confronting someone like this. If you could spot them, and take pictures of them getting in/out of the car and the number plates, it might give the cops something to go on but if you actually approach them they might hit you.

  • Do you have a personalised plate? Some people could confuse something like a '1' for an 'I'. I've had both number plate scanners at parking lots and even police get them wrong.

    • Haha, that's annoying. Nope, generic plate. No 1's, I's or O's.

well stop wasting time and go do it. jeeze

Dont forget to take your plate off the toll road account

But then how would I make it to the front page of OzBargain? Jeez.

Also, I went to the popo late last night. If I had time, I would've gone to Vicroads. Will do when they're open on Monday.

      Thanks, I will do.

Some people need to chill their ass and invest in a sarcasm detector.

          • @Tuftsdude: I think you need to look up the definition of sarcasm. A joke perhaps, but sarcasm it was not.

My niece got a speed camera fine and and we knew it wasn't her as she was somewhere else at the time with her car.
It turned out the dealer had put 2 different plates on her car and the did the same to another car they sold at the same time. Niece drove her car for around a year a never noticed the mismatched number plates.

    Bikies obviously

    • The OzBargainer in me wants to save the money and just DIY it y'know?

  • Unfortunately it sounds like changing the number plate is your only out.

I had a case in NSW, I contacted HWP and they put him as "HOT" on the ANPR, picked him up after 3 days.

Nice move - would've made a great episode on Highway Patrol.

  • While we're talking about forged plates - can I actually make my own personalised plates using the registered rego number ? I hate those prison tins on my car.

    • +1

      No.

If the plates were stolen then you need to report them as such and get new ones made. If they're damaged then you need to get them replaced.

  • Get new plates
