Rough Price Guide for a Toilet Cistern Replacement

Hi All,
I'm having a problem with a toilet cistern that I'm presuming needs to be replaced. It's leaking water, and the buttons don't work properly (and is just really old in general).

I wanted to check with you guys (if anyone has had anything similar done recently) about what is a reasonable price for a plumber to come out and do a replacement on the cistern.
Looking at one of the plastic caromas e.g. https://www.bunnings.com.au/caroma-wels-3-star-4l-min-solita…

From a previous search of the forums, it seems there was an Aldi deal for $300 to replace the whole toilet including installation. Is a cistern replacement much less work, or would it be roughly the same?

It's a really long drive for me to go out myself (a different property to my residence), so I don't want to replace it personally.

Thanks

    • Thanks for the reply. So there is no difference in price between installing just the cistern vs installing the whole toilet?

  • I could only guess that a plumber would charge an arm and a leg to replace a cistern.

That one you've chosen looks like a good choice though. Caroma website says that it is a 6/3L flush and can be converted to 4.5/3 or 9/6L flush for an older toilet pan. Really old toilets are designed for a larger cistern that uses 9L to flush so its good that you can convert this one to supply that if needed.

You can also pretty much replace everything in a toilet cistern if required including buttons/flush valve, seals, fill valve etc. https://www.bunnings.com.au/our-range/bathroom-plumbing/plum… Certainly more expensive to get a plumber to replace all of these than to just get a new cistern but a good option if only one of them has gone.

If its such a long drive to your place, wouldn't a plumber be charging extra for travel time too?

    • Sorry I wasn't more clear, it's a long drive for me to make, but not for a local plumber.
I.e. the toilet is at a different property to the one I live in

    Depends on your destination…

  • it's not very hard to DIY.

a cistern either is attached to the toilet or bolted to the wall behind.

    water pipe going in.
    toilet/flush pipe out

watch some youtube clips. order cistern and plumbers tape from ebay.

replace your toilet seat at the same time.

~$115 delivered on ebay for cistern and toilet seat

the ebay cistern is just screwed to the wall

  • Replaced mine the other day, price of parts was $119 and about 30 mins worth of installation time.
