[AMA] I Am Uber Eats Delivery Driver in Melbourne

Hi guys,
first of all thanks for stopping by.

I am posting this because I would like to find out what uber eats delivery drivers are going in terms of it is worth doing or not and what people think of uber eats delivery drivers.

My background

I have recently graduated in Hospitality Management and working at most known service apartment as a receptionist. I am doing uber eats while I am free and so far I think it is worth doing.

Just a few things that grinds my gear

  • One thing that I have problem is picking up order from McDonald. Staff at McDonald takes longer to pack the food and it is running by younger staff most of the time.
  • I have been in the situation where restaurants treat me like one of their employee or ignoring my existence( so that my waiting time is longer) by pretending that they don't see me entering the restaurant(yes you Mcdonald staff)
  • Customer who put the incorrect delivery address even though uber eats app is saying that your location is wrong the whole time. It is not like a few blocks and it is more like 7 or 8 km away from the initial address.

      like hitting my face??

      No

Like trying to sleep with me?

      also no

      • +1

If a customer you were attracted offered what would you do? What are the consequences of clocking out for an hour when you're meant to be delivering.

        • +2

Nothing would happen really. You can stop getting delivery requests anytime you want.

  • +1

Have you ever taken a bite out of someones order, or been tempted to?

    • +4

NO it is so tempting though as you can smell a lot of different food. I usually eat before lunch and dinner rush so that I won't feel hungry while Im working

  • +2

What kind of transport do you use to deliver

    • -8

      By car

bro I thought I said I am the delivery driver(not rider)

  • +1

Is it important that I rate every delivery? I think the last time I used uber eats, the app's design made it very easy to give thumbs down by mistake

    • It is not but it helps for uber and driver. I would say I would deliver to same customer multiple times as they gave me thumb up everytime. Disappointing customer would be last thing uber wants to do to customer.

  • Ever had angry stares or confrontation from cabbies? Or inspector trying to fine you?

    • +1

I am delivery driver so no.
I would keep my eyes for inspector as I sometime park where I should not park

  • Is there any beef with Deliveroo and Menulog drivers?

    • +1

No. I know people who do all three companies.

I heard that menulog driver works for the restaurant where Uber eats driver works for uber.

      • +1

I thought uber drivers worked for themselves.

        • You get ping from Uber so technically you work for Uber

          • @supercheapguy: Are you an employee?

            • @JIMB0: I don't really understand what you meant.
I consider someone as my employer if I get pay from them. Hope this answers your question.

is there a food you don't like delivering e.g. it smells or the restaurant is bad?

    • +3

No. I like trying different food plus the smell wont stay long when you open your windows.
I live in Australia where people with different race and nationalities so I can try a lot of different foods.

I usually buy the food from restaurant where I get the most order so I know it is good.

+1 for fast replies and telling us the perks of doing what you do (ie you know all the good cafes & restaurants)
        :)

        • Thank you

  • Sonu need to wait for the food at the right or the app will tell you when the food is ready to be picked up? What is your longest wait for food to be picked up? In this case how would you get paid for the wait time?

    • +1

You will get notification when restaurant receives the order (it goes whoever closer to restaurant), you accept it and you go to pick it up.

The longest I have waited is more than 45 mins. Restaurant screwed me over by not telling me how long it is to be ready.

      • so you wont get paid for the time you wait and will customer cancel the order for such a long wait?

        • +1

No sir. You also don't get paid for driving to pick up address

          • @supercheapguy: That is sucks

            • +1

@SnoozeAndLose: Yeh you will get orders closer to you during the day where there are more drivers. You will get orders as far as 10km from you when there are less drivers example midnight

              • @supercheapguy: 10 Km is a bit of driving.

What if no one pick up the order then the customer has nothing to eat?

                • @SnoozeAndLose: Restaurant will get paid
                  Customer will get refunded
I won't normally take delivery requests if it's 10 km away. Only I don't make enough for a day.

        • +2

I forgot to add. You will get $10 from Uber if customer or restaurant cancelled the order when you arrived to restaurant

What is your gross income in a typical shift, how long is this typical shift and how many deliveries would you make in this typical shift.

    • +4

I do lunch time and it's about 10 deliveries. I average $10 per delivery. It will be $8 per delivery after fuel expense.

      • How long is 'lunch time's and how much do you set aside for tax and car expenses excluding fuel?

        • +1

I just start around 10 am or 11 am whenever I feel like it. I sometimes just turn on the app and doing my own things like while I am driving back to my home or going for groceries. I won't really mind if I don't get orders while I am online as I am not really doing anything except waiting (I can watch Netflix unlimited with my optue plan. Thanks to whoever posted that deal a while ago)

        • +1

For tax I don't really worry

I save most of of income

I live in a shared house, drive 15 year old car and I try not to buy things I don't need.

  • The times I’ve used Uber eats it’s taken wayyyy too long and food arrives luke warm to cold. Do you get a lot of bad feedback in the regard?

    • +1

No I don't really what the food is cold or hot as I don't really care. I only deliver and most customers know it's restaurant. They get notified when I leave the restaurant so they k should be able to tell the food is already cold in this case.

    are u indian

    • +1

      No

Did you eat some of my hot chips again on Friday night?

    • +1

      No I can't and won't
Most restaurants seal the bag nowadays.

  • +1

As a uber driver you need a less than 10 years old car, how about uber eats? Can you drive more than 10years old car?

    • For delivery you can use as old as 1998 model

  • +1

You get orders around mid night.?
More pay for late hour delivery?

    Any requirement to become one?
Bike, motorcycle or car is most preferred?

Would I make any money doing 10pm-2am shift?

    • You be surprised that people would order anytime of the day. From midnight until 3 am pick up would only be McDonald or late kebab shops.
      You will get the same.
You would need police check, ID and a vehicle with insurance.

Bicycle (No insurance needed Uber takes 35%) I know people who register as bike and drive car. Don't do that because Uber is not stupid. They know you can't paddle 40km per hour even with electric bike.
Motorcycle or car (Insurance needed and Uber takes 30%) car is better in my opinion as you can take a nap if you think you need one and you will heat from the car or air conditioning

      • Uber takes 30/35% of what?

        • +1

I don't really know how to explain it. Let's say you are getting $10 for the delivery( it includes pick up, drop off and km) Uber will only pay $7 and take $3 for this example

  • What if no one pick up the order then the customer has nothing to eat?

    • Answered this on above comment

  • Do you get to keep the full tip if someone tips you? I tipped an Uber Eats driver via the app because the weather was bad and he was on a bike. Realised after I maybe should have tipped him cash because Uber might keep some of the tip?

    • Uber driver gets the whole tip but cash is always better.

  • How do you cope parking your car when you pick up and delivering your order? Especially in busy restaurants in CBD area where its impossible to find a park and then also delivering to a CBD apartment when there is no car park??

    • I just don't go to those area since I am delivering with car. It's just waste of time and some customers want you to deliver to the door of their apartment where you need to pass different gates (meaning more of your time).
I sometimes park my car at ticket parking without paying parking fee. Its the risk you take as you don't wanna be walking across 3 blocks.

It's not worth it even you ride bike. Your bike will get stolen.

  • I don't think it's unusual for a teenager working in KFcDonald King Subway to not give a rats razoo about your presence in the store. Doesn't matter whether you're a customer or a delivery driver…

How often do you get a bad customer though?

    • +1

Not really. Most customers are aware that you are just delivering food. You got nothing to do with the food.

Only the restaurants try to make you do things and make you wait longer than you should.

  • What are the 3rd party property insurance policies which covers uber eats too?

  • Why do you (Uber, Menulog, etc,) constantly forget to provide forks and napkins?

    • We need to add it manually in ubereats order

      • We always add a comment at the checkout to please provide napkins and forks/spoons.

        • In some stores, we need to add single use items similar to food items, also at checkout I remember there is a on/off switch to inclue utensils
