Why JB Hi-Fi/HN/TheGoodGuys? When Others Have Much Better Choice

In the market for whole home setup.

going through forums/deal pages to get good deals.

i was looking for Washing Machine and Fridge. JB Hifi/HN/TGG all had huge listed prices. Visited some physical stores and not much difference in price. Meanwhile appliance online have listings with much better price in ebay and another 15-20% discount on top of it. these are very good deals.

question is why people want to buy from JB Hifi/HN/TGG when you have better deal here? is it because they dont know about the deals or simply scared of getting a bad service? i understand different stores have different deals with specific brands, but i checked 5-6 different products and everything is better in appliance online or similar store from ebay.

apologies if it is useless discussion, just first time buying big ticket items(apart from lappy/mob) and want to make a good decision.

Harvey Norman and others will haggle.
Last washer we bought happened to be at the same time a friend wanted one too.
We called a couple of stores and got a price $50 under appliances online including delivery and old unit take away.
I have tried haggling with Appliances online, but they are reluctant.

    • Thanks.

    • I second this. HN had a sale on a fridge and a washer, both of which were the exact models I wanted. The standard price (excl shipping) was about $50 cheaper (for both) than AO, then the sale made it about $200 combined cheaper than AO. THEN I haggled and got another $150 off (with shipping included). So I saved about $350 on AOs price.

Generally the ticket prices shouldn't vary that much (obviously not always the case) because most retailers these days will check out the competition and match or beat them. The Bosch 8kg front loader (WAW28460AU) for example is $1067 at Appliances Online and $1099 at TGG & Harvey Norman.

Having worked in retail for a few years (and currently working at TGG) I'd 100% recommend asking for a price beat. The eBay sales are a little different, because eBay subsidises the discount - as far as the retailer is concerned, you pay full price.

Some people want to speak to a person face to face, some people like having someone to yell at if something goes wrong, or some people like to pick up the product that day for themselves. Others may just like being able to see things in person before buying them.

    • Thank You.

Got the point. May be i should try one more time for price beat.

A lot of people don't shop around either from being to lazy not knowing how or because they trust the "big names" I always try to buy from the lowest and will if I can wait until it's on special or try to price match

Often as well, if your microwave or fridge breaks down, you want a new one today. So often its a trip in the car to grab one right there and then.

  • The Good Guys have beaten everyone else on price with no issues every time I have ever tried. Had mixed experience with Harvey Norman ding the same.

  • The other week we thought our fridge had given up.
Temps were on the way up, the freezer not freezing, anyway, while we start thinking sh*t here comes xx $$ expense, I went looking for the cause, and it wasnt because the thermostats were turned down, the dam plug had come out just a little from the wall, just enough to disconnect the power, plugged it back in and all good, now we have a thermometer in the fridge and freezer.
I think my boy had squeezed in beside the fridge and cabinet playing hide n seek and it pulled it out just enough.

Anyway, crisis diverted from having to 'rush' to sort out a new fridge before all the food spoiled and without being able to spend a bit of time checking for what we wanted in features and size and of course price..

    • The first thing you do with any dud appliance is check the power and then power off/on. Amazing how often this fixes stuff :)
