Often bargains come up and on occasion some of us manage to pick up bargains thanks to you guys & others on ozbargain and other sites.. The problem I have always had is that the cheaper flights are often with budget airlines which have a big limitation on luggage, etc. I have a few tips which I always use for travel to ensure you can make the most out of minimal luggage - NOTE: I'm not a small guy so travelling light is tough:
Bags: I use a small cycling backpack, the type with a mesh frame so it's ultra lightweight but can hold approx 7kg (the limit for the flight and no more). I also wear a fairly thin rain/wind jacket but take it off on the flight and for airport security - something with huge zip up pockets which can also be filled with 'luggage' which needs to be shown in security such as medicines, liquids, phone chargers/cables, powerbanks, etc. Once the bag is emptied it can be used for travel at the destination.
Clothing: On my travels to SE Asia and other places with a hotter climate I buy ultra lightweight shirts. I pair these up with convertable trousers (zip off leg type) and take a maximum of 3 pairs of trousers, and a weeks os so worth of shirts and underwear, etc. Ikea has great small cloth accessory bags which are perfect for tightly packing clothing, etc. into so they can be pulled out in a hotel room and lived out of…I take an extra for laundry and generally do laundry once every week. For cooler climates I tend to take a warm inner jacket which can be worn on the flight.
Toiletries: Always buy at the destination where possible.
I rarely travel with more than around 6kg of carry on luggage, even for trips of 5-6 weeks…it makes getting around so much easier and hassle free! Hope this helps someone!!
