I can't say I'm that surprised to be honest. As the article mentions, when you have companies like Kmart and Target offering cheap high quality goods it's not surprising that the Reject Shop struggle to compete when they have a lot of cheap low quality goods.
I'll certainly miss the supply of Milka chocolate and cheap Dr Pepper though.
Reject Shop is squeezed by KMart from one side and Daiso on the other. Daiso is a cheapo store but it doesn't feel like it. The products stocked there have a decent quality to them.
I'm getting tired of the 'consumer confidence' excuse. Your product is simply out of date, poor quality, and the competition passed you by. Reject Shop is stuck with a business model that worked fine in the 1990s but hasn't move on since then. The last time I purchased something from RS the cashier asked me to score her performance out of 10 on the EFTPOS machine. It's embarrassing to be honest.
