Buying a Huawei Laptop Now? Bad Idea?

I've been on the fence about picking up the Matebook D for a while, but after all the Huawei news, is it better to look at a different brand?

I wouldn't want to spend all that money only for Microsoft to stop supporting Windows on it.

  • I wouldn't recommend it to be honest, but I'm also the "nope, no risks"

However, if you were planning on running Linux it's probably still a fine buy.

I'm not totally sure how it'd work though, as you could just install windows yourself?

Someone more knowledgeable then me on this anyways. Asking on reddit would probably also be a good idea.

Can't think of a reason why not unless there's special parts made specifically for the Huawei that might lose driver support.
    That seems unlikely.
The only problem might be that you'll need to source any driver updates manually through the part Vendor rather than from a Huawei repository.

Microsoft don't distribute Windows Updates through the hardware vendor, so that won't be an issue

  • What is it about the Huawei device you're looking at that is drawing you to it? Is there another device on the market that offer similar features at a similar price?

    • The Huawei Matebook D 14" has a nice form factor, specs and build quality for the price. It's gotten great reviews. It's that or the Asus VivoBook F510UA which is cheaper but offers similar specs. Both are on Amazon US.

  • Where do you buy it from? My concern is that Huawei may have their hand full due to ongoing and upcoming matters that they may neglect issues like bug fixes, driver update, bios update, and manufacture warranty.

    • In my experience Huawei aren't using modified drivers as such so you'd be able to get them from hardware vendors (e.g. Intel) and Windows Update wouldn't be affected either. Warranty however… yeah could be an issue.

All the "bits" inside are going to be from various vendors. For instance an Intel CPU, Realtek networking, nVidia graphics etc. Windows isn't going to not update because it detects its on Huawei branded laptop, the drivers are all going to keep updating because none of the insides that need drivers to be updated is Huawei stuff.

This whole thing is a beat up anyway, just US playing games over trade stuff. They did the same to ZTE then lifted the restrictions, will just end up the same here imo.

  • If a Huawei products get heavily discounted or awesome prices on used market then there's no reason not to buy. Ban is short and always ways around things.

    • Yeah especially with the underground community there will be all sorts of ways to sideload and sideupdate your Huawei devices in no time with their large market penetration

  • Go for the Asus VivoBook, buddy. I have a brand new MateBook X Pro and I'm so pissed off about this. It's basically a Mod: Foul langugage brick now. I can't return it since I broke the seal on the box, and no one's gonna buy it second-hand since Huawei is basically the new MSG… Unless I sell it for $1. I might as well flush it down the (profanity) toilet. If I had the money, I'd fly to the states and bash Trump's skull in with my Matebook until he collapses on the ground, bleeding and begging me to stop. Maybe I should pay a visit to Pauline Hanson, she's also an orange racist (profanity) whose face looks like the inside of an anus but it's a lot cheaper to get to her…

Don't flush it down the toilet. I can pay you $100 for your MateBook X Pro, that is 100X of what you offer, deal?
