  • Mr Chen really loves prawns!

    • somehow I read it …loves porns!

    • yes, guess it’s because we think of them as a luxury item, most people like prawns and nothing to steel, just steam and eat, but the prawns used are farmed prawns, not like australian king prawns.
the different products in the range have different % of prawn also.

  • Are these any good, as far as supermarket stuff is concerned? (Please indicate if you are a student)

    • I can honestly say as a dim sim regular these are the best store bought prawn dumplings you can get. Not as good as dining in I might add. I have tried other brands but they don’t really come close to Mr Chen. They also come with a delightful dipping sauce to compliment the dumplings really well.

      • Roughly how much would these cost in a restaurant out of curiousity?

        • For prawn roughly $2 each

          • @gimme: So about $16 for 8 compared to $3.75 for 8 (this deal)? Wow.

      • Tried and very positively surprised. Will get more

    • +1

not a student, the ginger prawn and harlow are as good as you get in restaurants …… great for saturday or sunday brunch or lunch.
trick is steaming the ginger prawn long enough for pastry to go soft.
faster and cheaper than uber eats and less hassle as you don’t need to be dressed to answer the door.

    • Yep. The Diana Chan ones are good too (I might even say better, but not on special as often, and less pieces per pack. Only tried Szechuan Pork though)

  • Sorry dumb question but can you make these in the microwave?

    • nope, you cant make these in the microwave ! Ask Mr chen if he can make hargow in the microwave

      • Can you just boil them? or do you need to do the whole steam process also?

Basically trying to find something very low maintenance almost lower or similar to 2 minute noodles.

        • Best to use some form of steaming method, they will fall apart if you attempted to boil them.

        • only thing simpler than 2 minute noodles is a banana, don’t even need to wash just peel and it’s less then 2 minutes and healthier.

    • no, you need steam to get the pastry to the right texture.

    • A microwave container with a bit of water in the bottom creates a pseudo-steamer in a microwave. The results aren’t as good as if you steamed them over a stove, but lunch quicker and less clean up; worth it if you’re in a rush.

  • the last time these were half price i stocked up and bought around 6 boxes.. they didnt last and I will get some more with these deal.. aboslutely delicious.. best store bought of its type, the included dipping sauce is delish as well. highly recommend. these are best steamed only.

    • What steam setup do you use?

Until I find a good one I am thinking of making a makeshift setup with a pot and metal collander with lid on the top..

Not sure if it will work but no idea which steamer to buy.

      • Get a cheap wok if you don't have one and a bamboo steamer

        • Oh nice I have a wok already do I just need a bamboo steamer now.

  • Bought the chive & prawn wonton last time they were half price. Absolutely delicious. They come with a little seasoning packet to make a broth.
