    How old is your 3GS may I ask?

    If the warranty just recently expired, then try your luck at an apple store as it could be cheaper than getting someone to replace the battery for you. I recently had my battery kaput around 2 months after the warranty expired. Brought it to an apple store, and they replaced the entire phone under the battery replacement program. Cost me ~$100.
