Last time I had 18 YO whisky from Aldi, It was nightmare!

  • The young singles and cheap blends get decent reviews. Slightly dubious though about how amazing a 25YO could be at this price point but definitely gonna try and pick one up to find out. Cheers OP.

  • Is there money back guarantee if you are not happy with the product?

Why would they have whiskey 25 years old? It took 25 years for someone to be silly enough to buy the barrels and bottle it! And then it sat on the shelf for 6 years without moving. But never mind, Aldi can move anything.
I gave them the benefit of the doubt on 24yr. Not again! There are plenty of better options. Its age won't help

  • highland park 12 and laphroaig 10 as well. the HP12 is a great whisky esp for $70 or whatever price Dan's or First Choice matches with

Both have gone downhill over the years. HP way overrated these days. Stick with Ardbeg 10 at this price point.

      • hp12 still tastes good to me. as for ardbeg 10, haven't managed to get half way through a bottle i've had for 5 years, I thought it would be good but something about it just rubs my tastebuds the wrong way

      • +2

Agreed, you can't beat Ardbeg 10 under $100

  • Anyone had this 25 yr before? Seems to be a yearly special thing so someone would have had it last year or prior.

From what I could easily find by googling they seem to be single releases. So presumably they're buying x casks off a different distillery each time, so unlikely anyone's had this release before.

      • I don't find much reliable googling. Last year some fellow gave the one i tried an award 🤣
But yes, likely they are buying the barrels distilleries don't want 🤦🏼‍♂️

        • There can be plenty of reasons why a distillery will sell for relabelling. One of my favourites was a white label 8YO Islay from The Whiskey Shop.

Bit of a lucky dip I guess though.

          • @rancho: Maybe. But I'd say in this case, at this age statement and at this price the odds are against us.

    • I see makes sense - Perhaps the 21yr old bottle at Costco is a better choice at the same price.

Terrible whisky: bought last year and returned it back. Age doesn't mean better whisky. There are many other whiskies with lesser age statement that are much better quality.

      Age doesn't mean better whisky

I wish more people realised this. Lagavulin is a great example; the 12yo is so much better than the 16yo (and priced accordingly, if you can find it).

Drinkable but not very good for the years. I have the 18 year and my brother has the 25 year old ones. Every time we see each other we try to get the other to drink them and I still have a third of the bottle left. His is nearly half full (we kept moving to different whisky after the first drink).

    • Is your brother's one definitely a 25YO highland? I think the Glen Marnoch's are single releases, from my googling I found various 21/24/29 year old single malts but no 25 YO.

I find it actually diminishes my appreciation for better whiskies because it dulls my senses.
Last time I got rid of the most, I conned my mates into a blind tasting night. Now I feel bad. Mates don't make mates drink Aldi whiskey.
It is useful for a Hot Toddy

Not available elsewhere, therefore not cheaper than competition per se.
When compared to other Scotch Whisky priced similarly, I highly doubt this will come off favourably.
    Not a deal for me.
