Saunaproof Wi-Fi-Enabled Tablet - Needs to Be Heat- and Moisture-Proof

Hey all

I've just built a heavy duty sauna in my backyard for the cold Canberra winters. I am in range of 2.4GHz Wi-Fi so most tablets would suit my purpose. I'm looking to watch streamed TV over Wi-Fi in my sauna - inside the 50-90°C range, with humidity.

Can anyone recommend a moisture-proof tablet, preferably one that's inexpensive so that I don't need to worry about its longevity? I have a UE Boom speaker that can sit on the floor and project sound via Bluetooth. If there are better solutions that are inexpensive, I appreciate your recommendations!

Thanks OzB.

  • In Japan they often had TVs in their saunas at onsens. However the tv was behind perspex/glass.

    • That's exactly the kind of setup I was thinking about! Just thought that there might be moistureproof solutions these days that don't involve a dedicated cabinet setup.

Sorry, cant help you with tablet. But im interested in how you built your sauna. I would like to build one as well, for cold sydney winter(s).
    How are you heating it?

I live in a rental and cant build anything permanent.

It's external, so I built a slab then built the sauna on top of it and wired it up. You could do a more temporary setup. There are saunas for $1000-2000 from China on eBay if you're not looking for particularly good quality, and one you'll need to move eventually.

    1. Get a moisture proof box for your device.
    2. Build a window in the sauna and place the device ‘outside’

Place the iPad in a ziplock bag.
Now place the opposite end of the ziplock bag inside another ziplock bag.

This will make it waterproof, when done right, and mostly high pressure/moisture proof as well.

For even more extreme results, you can rub some sort of oil (like glycerine) using your fingers, around the edge of the glass/display. And if you're feeling brave, around the USB port, aux port, volume buttons, power button, and SIM tray slot.

Lube up my iPad! Sounds messy.

You should probably have a look at this video about waterproofing

You can't really trust the water resistance because of how weak it actually is. You will never have water proofing, and whatever resistance you have wears down pretty fast.

    • Thanks - was just wondering if there was a tablet with adequate resistance for this purpose, that's cheap enough to replace if it shorts out.

Not recommended unless you want to blow up the battery

    • And the UE Boom speaker would go Ka-Boom too

      • UE boom still going strong, also Iphone that has been in there with me. No luck with the title though
