Hudway Cast Head-Up Display $147 @ Harvey Norman

30

This is cheaper than from the actual site (https://hudwaycast.com/)
Not sure is this any good or not, anyone have experience in this device?

This cast/mirror your phone screen to the HUD, so theoretically, is good for GPS Navigation, and you can use google maps, apple maps, waze, etc

Should be free collect from store or $7.95 delivery I think

  • Not very reassuring that Gerry put 'Cheap' in the product title

    • I think, Gerry use to sell it for $499 and no one buy, and I think hudway releasing a new one soon, Hudway Drive (https://hudway.co/drive) which is should be better.

But I never own any of them, so cannot comment myself

    • That Hudway Glass (https://hudwayglass.com/), which is basically different one, you put your phone at the bottom of the reflective glass, and I think that cost $50

But Hudway Cast use screen casting, like airplay and miracast for android.

Although, Hudway cast also seems some people like it, some dont >_<

      Never have one, myself

    • It's a different product i believe. One uses the phone to reflect on to the glass and the other uses WIFI to transfer data to be displayed on glass.

  • +1

Make sure you read the Kickstarter comments. Seems there's an issue with iOS 12, if you're an apple user

  • Any good for this display over normal gps?

    • +1

      waze
      google maps AR

without getting your phone burnt / blown up by sun

      • I can hide my phone away from the sun. That is easy. Do you like this display?

        • i don't have one

where do you hide your phone away from sun ?

          • +1

@dcep: Air vent of the right hand side of your steering wheel.

          • @dcep: this is a casting device not one of those where you place your phone and reflect it onto the dash if thats what you are thinking,…

  • Before you buy, just download and try the "Hudway Go" from the APP store and you will know why it does not sell well.

    • 500k+ download in google play

      • But so many bad reviews.

    • Correct me, but I though you can cast any other GPS apps like Google Maps and Waze? You need to use "Hudway Go" for Hudaway Glass, right?

But yeah, "Hudway Go" sux, especially in Australia, maps very incomplete.

  • i like the idea of HUD.
does any one have any other good alternative to this?

    • i use navdy… they went out of business but they still work with Google maps.
you may need to visit US ebay site..

      • I use Navdy too. Awesome tech but unfortunate. One day I will do the jailbreak and update the internal maps. I bought a new spare cheap off ebay 6 months ago in case this one develops an issue.

      • I was following those guys and the development of the navdy for a while, shame they went belly up

    • There are Hudly (https://gethudly.com/), but I don't know how good it is, and you have to import it.

There some other in kickstarter, but not sure any other will be come out.

Used to be, there is Navdy, you can buy it on JB Hifi, but $800 AUD and now they are out of business

  • I just bought one, but almost instantly regret placing an order. Looks as though the OBD-II cable isn’t available, so there are features that will be missing. I think I’ll cancel my click and collect order.

  • I bought one of these about a month ago, from HN, after semi-following them (and Navdy) online for a few years. As some one mentioned earlier, they have a new model coming out soon, which addresses some of the issues of the previous generations.

That said, it still looks to be a decent piece of kit. I say 'looks', because unless you have an iPhone, you can't get it to work.
The Android app (Hudway Cast) has been pulled from the Google Play store, and the only way to cast or update the firmware of the device, is through the app. This is not to be confused with another app for their basic model (simply a reflective screen) called Hudway Go.

I've been in touch with their support desk, and although they've provided an unreleased app, it is buggy, missing a library and does not connect to the device. I posted the screen shot of my results over a week to them, and had no further contact from them.
As such, I'll be returning the device to HN, which is a shame, as it looks quite promising. I'll certainly be following the next generation device for updates and release.

My experience may not be indicative of yours, but as a word to the wise, make sure you have clearance on your dash, as some cars have a narrow angle, and the device will not be able to raise it's screen fully.

    • So its not possible even to run Waze from your phone linked via USB cable?

  • Avoid if you have an android phone running Android 6.0+ (Marshmellow and beyond).

Google ceased supporting Miracast (without rooting your ROM) beyond this point, locking Android users into Chromecast.

    The HUDWAY is airplay/miracast only.

  • The basic one is $25
