Poll: what do you consider a large expense? (currently at this moment)

Hi just thought this would be a relevant poll, if there is an identical poll, mods please remove this post.

So how much is a large expense for you ?
A more accurate description would be:
This is the amount you are currently able to spend at once, before it would be a financially careless decision.

I have set the limit at $50,000 as I expect that is the limit people are willing to spend on a motor vehicle.

  • Hi mods are poll votes private? This may have an affect on how many people are willing to participate.

what do you consider a large expense?

    it depends what it is?
50k for a car is ok
50k for a handbag is not ok.

a large expense is rather relative to some people.
some people see the value in spending $500 on dinner while some cannot see the value in spending $50.

    • Ok yes I understand it is difficult to ask & answer.
But 50k for a car ok, means 50k is your answer.
In order to respect your privacy I will state that your examples were examples and only that.
And I am asking ‘currently’ so spending amount now, anything in the past or future is excluded.

    • 50k for a car is ok

Need to spend more if you want a high yield vehicle though.

  • how long is a piece of string?

  • Why was spackers angry with me :-(

Have to think hard about those $50 purchases.

    • i think these take me the longest to decide on tbh

      • Yes I understand, a few $50 hits can hurt as bad as $200.
I am asking ‘currently’, so you may have 1 or 2 $50 spends left in you, then your answer will be $50 or $100.

    $50 meal - OK.
$5 toll road - bothersome, but maybe.
$2 phone app - close to no chance in hell.

Phone apps always crack me up. So many people complain about the prices of an app that they use day in and day out. $2.99 is outrageous… but that same person will buy a single use coffee for $6, only to piss it out later.

Another one is the movie vs. Netflix thing. I have friends that refuse to sign up for Netflix because $15 a month is too expensive, but think nothing of going to the movies once or twice a month at around $50 a throw per movie.

For clothing, I like to aim for $1 per wear or better. If I buy something for $50 but will use it 50 times I think that's reasonable. The same applies for a phone app, if you're going to use it multiple times per day/week, a few bucks is nothing.

Of course all that went out the window with my wife's wedding dress. 😱

It must be rough to be an app developer. If I use it every day and get a whole lot out of it it really don't mind throwing them a couple of bucks.

I absolutely refuse to pay anything for phone apps

But let me guess, you’re happy to buy a $6, single use coffee? :D

        • +2

Nope, I don't drink coffee either

          • @87percent: I buy instant coffee and coffee beans from the supermarket, though I have bought a coffee while out and about a few times.

I always see people with iPhone Xs using Tripview lite and having to enter in their destination every time. You spent $1.5k on a phone, but can't spend $4.50 to save your trips that you use every trip???

$2 phone app - close to no chance in hell.

Google survey credits? Is a free app not worth selling all your personal information for?

  • i have answered the poll on the basis that financially careless means to put me into a pickle.

otherwise, as others have said, cost/affordability is all relative.

do i think it's financially careless to pay $10 for parking if there's free parking 10 minute walk away? yes. 20 minute walk away? on a nice day, yes. on a 40 degree day on the way to a meeting? no, it's worth it. 40 degree day in my gym gear? waste of money.

do i think $8k on a 1 month holiday is a large expense? yes. is it financially careless? no.

i think it's financially careless to pay full price for a movie ticket ($25) when it takes 1 minute to book online for $14 (assuming u have the option).

    • Thanks yes you have answered the poll correctly.
