What Should I Do? Fake Dyson Hair Dryer from Local eBay Seller

Hi guys,

What should I do with a fake dyson hair dryer sold by a Australian local eBay seller?

I got this hair dryer from eBay seller aus-depot last October and it went faulty last week. So I reached to dyson Australia and sent it to them to repair/replace it.

However, they called me today saying it's a fake dyson hair dryer, and they are going to confiscate it and issue a confirmation of counterfeit for me to as a source of proof to claim my money back from the seller (any chance at all?)

I was stunned as I always think Aussie local sellers are trust worthy as we got a well-developed law system to prevent this kind of issue.

Can you please kindly advise whom or which government entity should I reach to so I can potentially claim back some of my loss?

Very much appreciated!

I think I paid on eBay gift card, so it shows $0 on the paypal receipt.

I can see here that the item was purchased last year and it's no longer covered by our money back guarantee program.
Kalixta18:54 PM
I totally understand how you feel right now, xxxxxx but what I mean here is that for the money back guarantee program we only have 3 days for you to be covered and for PayPal it's 180 days.

I can see here that this transaction is more than 180 days which is no longer covered as well by PayPal.

The best thing I can do now is that for this to get resolve, I will contact the seller for you for them to have this settled.

———— Update ———————
Holy moly!

I swear they still got a whole bunch of items on sale yesterday (10 May) before i talked to eBay. And the fake dyson hair dryer was listed for $399 delivered.

This really workssssssssss! All the stuff they were selling got delisted!

I am happier seeing it's being closed than getting my money back!

    Paypal claim…. Pretty simple

    • I think I paid on eBay gift card, so it shows $0 on the paypal receipt. Would that still work?

      Thanks

      • Do an ebay claim to start with then - using a gift card complicates things

        • Yeah probs screwed as Paypal is the 180 day warranty

  • Can you please kindly advise whom or which government entity should I reach to so I can potentially claim back some of my loss?

Contact the platform you used to buy??? Ie ebay and PayPal??

  • Please post pics when available.

    Curious.

      • Oh, I mean the pic of actual product. Would like to know if they look different and how.

trust me, if you are first-time user of dyson hair dryer, you wont be able to tell.

i consider myself a tech geek, and i hate to say that but i have to admit it worked fine and to my expectation.

Based in Malaysia, aus-depot has been an eBay member since 06 Aug, 2014

thanks for the clarification, it was sent from a NSW address, plus the confusing name, i guess that's why i made a mistake

It is a drop shipping company

      UPDATE:

the ebay staff is telling me:

      Kalixta19:03 PM
      Yes it's an Australian seller

      • +2

I don't think they are. Based on eBay ID history it is likely the seller also owns the ebay account: 24-7gooddealsusa

    You got burnt. Sorry OP.

    • +1

yeah, it was burnt out inside i believe…

Nothing you can do if eBay isn't willing to help and if the seller also isn't willing to help (hopefully they do). If you are planning on buying another one you could kindly ask Dyson if they are willing to issue a larger than normal discount on the same product.

    • Thanks mate, that's what i wish after they told me it's a fake, but nah. They only said they can issue a confirmation of counterfeit..

Have you actually contacted the seller and told them Dyson has said it is a counterfeit and asked for a refund? They might just give it to you to stop you writing a comment on their store.

    • Did so, and previously tried to contact them as well when i found it's gone faulty.

      Never ever replied at all.

why did u wait so long

    • hate to say that but it was good until it broke

why didn't you read the post?

I got this hair dryer from eBay seller aus-depot last October and it went faulty last week. So I reached to dyson Australia and sent it to them to repair/replace it.

However, they called me today saying it's a fake dyson hair dryer,

  • the answer is that you should always let your hair air dry

my hairdryer was $4 from savers and works a treat

  • Pretty good fake to last so long. Sorry OP, the ship has sailed.

    • T_T

  • Any chance it is actually an overseas model rather than a fake?

    • Thanks for your kind wish…

It’s just like apple au wont say iphone bought in other countries is fake

  • Big reach.

  • Shop closed.

They could easily just set up another eBay store and repeat

Check the "What to do if you've been duped" bit, it has some links.

    • Thanks mate, i reckon i will report to ACCC first.

  • Did you pay much different to rrp?

    • +1

      $435 vs $499, well…

  • Last October??? Its way too late now!
    Thats over 7 months ago.

Anything could have happened in that time including OP buying this fake Dyson hair dryer.
Not saying OP did but that is the question that would be asked so late in the season.

The fact is that OP cannot prove that that hair dryer was the one sent by the supplier.
The supplier could argue they sent a Genuine item - or at least in thier opinion.

hence best thing to do is to approach the supplier and expalin OPs situation and hope they come to some agreement on a refund.

Unfortrunately its well outside both PayPals and Ebays buyer protection and ther seller will know this.

    • thanks mate, but the truth is, sometimes the fake one works so well that you cannot tell it's a fake.

      • We can feel your pain, not every fake spells the product name wrong.

  • Wow. Sorry mate. I'm pretty scared to buy electronics from unofficial stockists but still surprised dyson fakes exist. Great lesson. Thanks for sharing.

  • Are companies (Dyson) allowed to confiscate item's that are counterfeit? I mean, it's still your property - did they need to run that by you or…

    • no, they confiscated it and did not issue a confirmation of counterfeit as they promised.

  • Any update?
I bought same item with same seller at ebay and I knew this morning it is a counterfeit from Dyson Service Centre.
The staff told me she will send a letter and I can get a refund from ebay.

    • I could not find a way to claim any reimbursement.
Would appreciate if you find one and are willing to share.

  • were you able to get any resolution to this?

    • No, and it took Dyson about 2 months to issue the confirmation of counterfeit, not helpful at all.

      • ahh, i've just tried opening a case with eBay, but they've said I need to give them seller 7 days to respond before they'll do anything (but as we know they've shut down and are unlikely to respond)

        • Did you get it from the same seller?

hate to say that, but it's really hard to tell it's fake until something went wrong, right?

          • @mrhorse: yep from aus-depot, and had the same situation as you, was fine until it broke and was taken to dyson when we found out about it being counterfeit - only plus side was they had a counterfeit letter ready to go on the day.

            • @altonius: i took it as a graduate certificate:
This is to certify that mrhorse has been finally frauded on eBay after being a member for nearly 10 years.

and will be more cautious in the future. lol
