Pocket Wi-Fi or Data for Europe Trip

Hi OZB!

Wondering if anyone has a recommendation for a pocket wifi or data sim for traveling around Europe?
I will be landing in Barcelona then traveling through Italy + Malta and back to Barcelona to return home.

Thanks in advanced!

  • Duration of trip?
Destinations in Italy (i.e. big cities vs. regional)?
    Same for Malta?

Free wifi is much more widely available in Europe (cities especially) so you may be able to get by on that basis, depending on your answers to the above questions.

    • Thanks for the assist!

Will be away for 1 month.
      Barcelona, Seville, Mallorca, Valencia
Sicily, Amalfi Coast, Rome, Florence, Venice
      Malta just the main city.

Ideally would like to have our own internet access as there will be some driving as well.

I've had a look around but just unsure who to go with. Was hoping for a recommendation if someone has had experience

        Sounds like a nice trip.
Certainly for all those locations in Spain, almost every cafe / bar etc., has free wifi for customers. We used those almost exclusively for internet access, and didn't use it when not on a free access. If the password isn't visible, you just need to ask.
I imagine it is the same for Italy, but I don't know anything about Malta.

I assume your reference to driving is in relation to maps? Most hire vehicles have maps installed.

This site seems to have a lot of info with alternate solutions: https://www.whistleout.com.au/MobilePhones/Guides/best-phone…

I have my own mifi for travelling (relatively cheap) and just plug in the local sim card for the country i'm in. Mifi is best when travelling with friends as you can share the cost of the sim. Think last time i went Europe i used an orange sim card with 20gb (they often have bonus data) for 14 days.

Mastercard partnered with Boingo http://www.boingo.com/ to provide unlimited free Wi-Fi access worldwide. I haven't used Boingo, but I signed up for free with my 28 Degrees Mastercard.
I use an unlocked Huawei E5770 4G LTE (Telstra) when I travel.
    (edit, forgot the word "free")

Go to the local mobile provider and get a sim that is usable in all of Europe. We paid €30 for 30gb in Italy at Wind. (Could have been about €15 if we just wanted Italy wide, so you could just get two sims).
