Free Course on Cryptography by Stanford University - 13th of May Start @ Coursera

160

For those interested in learning about cryptography (such as Bitcoin), Stanford University is offering a free course that anyone can take online.

The course runs for six weeks and includes weekly lectures, assignments, and optional programming projects. It’s pretty much just like doing a unit at Uni taught by a Stanford Professor.

Course free but you still need to pay to get certification 111$~

The certificate is optional. You can still take the course and learn for free.

The course is about cryptography not cryptocurrency and bitcoin is a cryptocurrency not cryptography. You are misleading people with that description.

I thought the crypto in cryptocurrency is related to cryptography? I found the course link on the Stanford’s center of blockchain research page https://cbr.stanford.edu/ so I’d assume it’s all related.

You're both right in different ways.

        • Yeah I should have worded it differently. Like bitcoin is probably the most well known, user-case of cryptography.

@[Deactivated]: I think HTTPS probably holds that title?

          • @[Deactivated]: I think you need the course if you think that Bitcoin holds that title.
But yes, the courses are really good, and worthwhile. I got a certification as well when it was free, and coursera was starting.

            • @darkmattersunB6c0MV: I’m new to crypto and blockchain which led me to the Stanford cbr site. Their mission statement reads, “The Center for Blockchain Research (CBR) is a focused research effort on crypto-currencies and blockchain technologies. ” and they list a couple of cryptography courses there including the free one I posted so I did automatically assume the course had something to do with crypto currencies and blockchain.

I would have been interested in a free course on cryptology but not gambling.

Cryptography: the art of writing or solving codes (encryption). Has been used for a very long time in different methods and applications (not just software).
Cryptocurrency: a digital currency in which uses encryption
Bitcoin: the grand daddy of cryptocurrency

  • I found this post very hard to decipher

  • These Stanford courses on Coursera are very hard. I've tried a couple of times to do the ML one but its waay above my cognitive pay grade, unfortunately.
