You can buy Telkomsel Simpati SIM with no credit for 10-30K IDR ($1-3) and then 100K credit for it at places all over Bali. The store holder will need to register it for you so bring your passport. Then you can download the My Telkomsel app (has English option) over WiFi somewhere and buy a data + calls bundle with the credit. I don't have the app anymore but 50-100K should get you data and calls. You can also buy credit everywhere to buy more data using the app. It's actually pretty easy - the only hard bit is store holders trying to rip you off. Also, there's lots of different packages in the app but you should be able to find the bundles.

    • Do you know if you'd be able to get the SIM at their airport after 10pm? I'll need it to book a cheaper taxi and use maps to the hotel so I'm not taken to a dungeon lol. And does the 100k credit include any data?

    SIM card
I was in Bali 2 weeks ago and pre-ordered one from Klook - 6gb for $10 -30 days usage- pick up at airport - klook guys -in orange t-shirts- are standing around just outside arrivals and will set up your phone with the sim -just show a print out/screen dump of the order confirmation. it's super easy ordering with klook. I had great reception the entire time in Bali.

also download go-jek app. this is the Uber app for Indonesia (there is no Uber in Indonesia/Bali). you only use cash. plenty of drivers (longest wait was ~20 minutes in a remote area). and extremely cheap. the most expensive fare was an one hour drive during surge pricing and it cost $17. (the trip there had cost ~$11)

    • I've heard grab/go-jek cars are banned in ubud and a lot of other main areas, to make business easier for the other taxis, though apparently bluebird are more accepted. Hotel told me worst that could happen is I could get booted out of the car by a competitor and left there.

Is this true? Really don't want to fork out $35 from airport to ubud by hotel shuttle or airport taxi. Bluebird would be cheaper but not as low as grab/go-jek.

      • yes it is banned in Ubud.

local laws can fine go-jek drivers for picking up passengers

but you can get a go-jek to ubud.

it's just when you are leaving.

the go-jek that picked me up in ubud told me not to talk to any one when I was waiting for them to arrive.

another time at Sanur -in that secured area-(not sure if go-jek is banned there) a taxi driver came over to me and asked if I was getting/waiting for a go-jek. I said I was waiting for my driver who I had hired for the day - I waiting for the go-jek driver I had just hired.

        • "it's just when you are leaving"
Reminds me of that song "you can check out anytime you like, but you can never ever leave!"

Ahh I see. Thing is, the web makes dps airport seem full of pushy and nosy taxi drivers and scammers. Hope you don't mind that questions nor OP (hopefully OP will be helped too)- hotel made it seem like pick up is banned from main touristy areas, including the airport. Any tips how to get into a go-jek from the airport to banned location? Or any location really?

Did you find it easy to user go-jek there? I mean, they see your pick up location from the app right? If there willing to take the risk, then they'll still come pick you up?

And thanks, I'll use your day-hire trick!

@Bargainbeth: it is extremely eas to use gojek there. the pick up location was always spot on.

you can get a gojek from airport to ubud. no problem.

the drivers are willing to take the risk because one picked me up. just dont tell any locals that you are gettng a gojek.

  • I also use Simpati in Bali (it is the red one). I get coverage even out of the city. Say away from 3. the coverage is poor. I found out you can recharge the credit at any Indomart. I just hand them the phone number and the money. You get a text with the balance.

I'm heading to Bali in 9 days. Will be my 14th trip :) relax and enjoy your time there! :)
I use https://www.travelinsurancedirect.com.au/ for my insurance. I always get no excess option and the premium cover for unlimited medical. It's around $110 with the 10% promo code on Ozbargin (TIDSAVES). The last trip I had to go to the GP. Bill was around $260. Claim placed Monday. Approved by Tuesday the following week. No questions asked. I use them every trip for insurance. Last year our flight got cancelled in NZ and or bag went missing. Got all the $$ we spent back. Don't got for a cheaper company without a recommendation from someone who has made a claim before.

  • Travel insurance direct is my final choice after reading lots of reviews- they seem more honest during claims. And their Pds doesn't seem as tight as insure&go's.

Go with simpati, I've heard the coverage is good. Lots of their other providers don't work on GSM phones.
