Randomly banned from PayPal for no reason [not banned now]

Has anyone been randomly banned from PayPal before? I randomly received an email saying "You can no longer use PayPal" because "We've noticed activity on your account that's not in line with our User Agreement and we can no longer offer you PayPal services."
I'm not even a seller and I've only made 3 purchases with PayPal. I called them about it and they refuse to tell me why I was banned. Should I just make a new account?

Edit: The only thing I can think of is that I have my VPN permanently on because the WiFi I have access to at home is an open network. The PayPal user agreement prohibited the use of "an anonymising proxy." but a VPN isn't a proxy. Sure a VPN is an anoymising service but not a proxy.

Edit 2: After sending the third support message, I wasn't given a canned response. They responded with "Our review is complete and we have restored your account." and not even an apology. Annoyed but at least I have my account back.

  • Fake email, ignore, move on.

    • Nope, it's not a fake email. That's what I thought at first but when I went on paypal.com myself it said the same thing.

  • never heard of this, were you paying for dodgy stuff or accepting payments from dodgy accounts?

    • Nothing dodgy, only payed for ebay, Youfoods and groupon. I have never accepted payments either. I only opened an account this year.

Two people banned from PayPal same day…

    • That person is a seller, I haven't sold anything before.

  • Did you take part in the amex deal at xmas time?

    • Nope, my account didn't even exist at Christmas time.

Your account probably got hacked (used the same password for multiple services?) and used for fake eBay buy-it-now listings.

    • Definitely not hacked, all transactions are made by me and I use a password manager.

  • What was the last known balance?

AFAIK it works on a flagging system, where it monitors for certain patterns that indicate problems, that are then reviewed by people at some time in the future. But it could possibly be a quick revenue booster.

    • I've never put money into the PayPal account, I've only linked my debit card. It's lucky that I didn't put any money in.

  • VPN would probably be why. Their algos probably auto flagged you as high risk or a potential ban evading person.

  • Vpn for sure.

  • Paypal must be doing some kind of security review

I bought something that turned out to be from a dodgy account, and when I disputed the transaction, they locked my account, and demanded I prove my identity. Seeing as how I answered all the other options before uploading photo id (which your forced to do) I'd say this is some action to hoover up all the photo IDs of their customers.

They're a freakin joke. As soon as there's a legitimate alternative option, everyones going to ditch paypal faster than you can say boo
