Virgin Points + Pay with Velocity

Hey guys

So I am sure this has been asked before but could not find the topic, basically I am looking at redeeming some velocity points for an interstate trip with my wife and I will be using the ANZ free flight.

When I go to search for the flight using points + pay it shows the cheapest fare level as being available and costing 21k points but once I login to velocity those point numbers jump to 40-60k on the most expensive fare column.

Hoping that made sense and someone might be able to share some insight.

Thanks

  • and I will be using the ANZ free flight.

Don't you have to call ANZ and they book the free flight for you?

AMEX lets you book yourself via https://compflight.virginaustralia.com/ but pretty sure the ANZ one has to be done via the ANZ call center

    • Hes using the ANZ free flight himself and wanting to use points + pay to get his wife on the same flight.

      • Yep that's what I am trying to do but do not understand why Virgin change the point value for flights once logging in.

Hopefully I am doing something wrong and its not the case.

      • Don't you have to do that as two bookings then? In the past for the ANZ 'free' flight, they do the booking for the card holder over the phone with ANZ and then the other paxs just do a seperate booking via the website on the same flight.

  • What's the flight route/time and date?

    • PER - MELB - VA678 21/09

      MELB - PER - VA695 28/09

I think I may have figured it out, when its just one adult I can select the 21k point fair but as soon as I add a child to the search only the far column appears for selection.

  • How many points do you have?

I've just checked and both flights you're looking for has at least two 'reward seats' in economy, so you shouldn't have any issues unless you don't have enough points.

'Economy Reward' is what you should be aiming for, and they cost 17,800 points + $24.28 per person, each way.

(Or you can pay 21,900 per person without a cash co-payment, but I don't recommend this as it's a waste of points)

For one adult and one child return, you'd be looking at 71,200 points and $97.12 overall.

    • Ok it must be that I do not have enough points yet, waiting for transfers from ANZ etc…

Thanks for checking I just found it weird that it would revert to the highest point option.

21k per person per direction? How many people are you trying to book, you said partner and kid, so 21k x 3 = 63k

I was referring to the per person price per direction, I know that the total calculates correctly.

It still seems weird that if you short on points the number of points required to purchase the flights doubles/triples just like that.

What you're seeing isn't a website glitch or anything.

The Reward Seats are fixed price, but limited in number. They'll always be 17,800 points + $24 for Perth to Melbourne, if available.

On the far right side are 'Any Seats'. These are cash fares converted into points at a poor rate, and they fluctuate with the cash price. They are usually more than double the price of reward seats.

If you don't have enough points for the cheaper reward seats, then the more expensive 'any seats' are all you'll see, hence the jump in points needed.

When it comes to actually buying an 'Any Seat', there'll be a slider with how many points you want to use to offset the cash fare. I recommend you don't use this unless absolutely can't get enough points to redeem the reward seats outright.

Thankyou this explains it all, I am sure I will have enough for one adult but potentially not for the child so will have to see if its worth it or not.
