Hey Guys,
I've recently been travelling more for work (and also flying more for holidays now that my child is a little older).
Generally, I prefer flying Virgin because they require less status points to reach silver, have family pooling on status (which is amazing if you travel as a family a lot) and they generally have cheaper flights than Qantas on routes they compete. I'm planning on trying to make a few extra miles to reach silver status soon. The issue is that my credit card earn QFF points and I generally fly Qantas (or partner, e.g. Emirates) routes for work so I mostly earn QFF points and status there. I don't fly Qantas enough to earn silver status. It's also much harder than Virgin because no family pooling.
I'm not a stickler for status, but the most valuable thing about silver status is the ability to use premium economy check-in counters for international flights which cuts down on wait times a tonne. For domestic, I only carry a cabin bag so online or kiosk check-in is fine and I go straight to the gate. Seat selection is also nice.
I've heard of people managing to get status matching with other airlines, I'm just wondering if it's possible to get Qantas to status match Virgin. I'd have to shell out to get extra Virgin status credits, but a family of three Sydney and back with pooling is 60 points.
I would call up Qantas myself, but I don't want to call up unarmed given they'll probably try to say no, so if you have any experiences, I'd love to hear them.
Cheers!
