  • We're on the cusp of a new generation of laptop hardware… i7 9750H (modest upgrade) and the 1660 ti and 1650 (good upgrades), with better energy efficiencies.

I'm probably going to look at a 9750H with a 1660 Ti, with a 500GB SSD, dual-lane 16GB RAM, and >100Hz 1080p IPS. I reckon I could get a price at about the same as this??

    • Well if this design at all appeals to you then there's the ACER Helios 300 up for preorder on Harvey Norman same price. But note it has SINGLE channel RAM. So that's a problem

If someone doesn't want to spend this kind of money, in Dell Outlet there are about 17 units of Alienware m15 with similar specs:
    - i7-8750H
    - 16GB RAM
    - 128GB SSD + 1TB HDD
    - 1080p 60Hz IPS
    - GTX 1060 6gb

    Price is ~$1669 delivered

GTX1060 is a significant step down from a 1070 for gaming purposes. Price is about right though.

      • that's right, but is 1060 -> 1070 upgrade worth $650?

  • I remember seeing some Metaboxs on clearance a little while ago that were 1070s with these sort of specs… I think price was sub $2000 and I was pretty tempted back then but ended up waiting for the newer gen stuff.

Not sure how build quality compares. I don't think Acer are one of the best? I realise Metabox are Clevo, and so maybe not the best, though I've read plenty of great reviews and could be willing to give them a shot. I think I'm gonna try Asus or MSI this time round, probably MSI, I like their look

    • I'm in the same boat. Metaboxes are great bang for your buck, but OS is an optional extra (not standardly included), so you have to make sure you have everything covered when looking at prices.
I too am holding off for now, the new Metabox alpha-x systems are out with 2060 cards for <$2000 on sale.
Sale has been extended until 10/05 for those with itchy trigger fingers :)

      • Yeah, I saw those. You can configure a 2060 to have an i7 8750H, dual-channel 16GB RAM, 500GB SSD, 144Hz, all for just sub $2000 with the current 28% off.

I was still preferring the 1660 Ti configured similarly, but comes with i7 9750H and maybe $80-100 cheaper.

This was going to be my first Metabox, so was gonna learn how to do the OS. I figured it's just a matter of downloading the Windows installer onto a USB from another PC, launching the setup through BIOS, then sourcing a key to validate it.

Its really easy, just make sure you choose the right version of Win10. 64bit Home is probable the way to go unless you need domain access anywhere. Get a retail version (not OEM) so you can transfer it between computers without any hassle. The 100% legit copies are around $160 online.
In a legal grey area, you can source win10 keys from various sources. Reddit has some good suggestions of sources that are pretty reliable but YMMV.

    • Yes a way better deal. 32GB vs 16GB RAM and 2TB vs 1TB hard drive for just $102 more. Plus free shipping from Mwave. But the Mwave deal ends in 2 days.
