First time setting up internet, NBN expected July this year, any advice?

First time setting up internet as I've just moved out of home into a rental, and thought I might seek some advice from people who know better in terms of internet plans and NBN. So currently only ADSL2+ is available at the property, however NBN is expected to be connected in July 2019. I'm currently using (and burning through) phone data so I'd like internet in the interim, so my questions are as follows:

  1. Does anyone have any experience with getting connected to ADSL2+ and then transitioning to NBN with as little setup fees etc. as possible and have any tips, recommendations?

  2. Any recommended ISPs for this process and in general in terms of speed/customer service?

I've had a browse through a number of different ISPs and the best deal seems to be with Exetel; $55 a month, first 2 months free and free transition to NBN. Can anyone recommend this or suggest a better option before I pull the trigger?

Thanks in advance

  • Are you in Sydney or elsewhere in NSW?

  • Just sign up to a 12 month telstra plan on mobile at jb. 60gig data should be heaps?

    • Sorry should have clarified usage, I have 52gb mobile data at the moment and it's nowhere near enough. I use netflix as well as a playstation and my roommate is similar so I'd really need unlimited.

      • I think most ISPs will let you change over for free when the NBN arrives.

      • Oh ok. Was thinking you could prob do optus who i belive had unmetered netflix but if playstationjng youll need decent net.

      • Exetel is good.

Do you know if you are getting FTTN or FTTP?

Most FTTN maxed out at 50/20 which is plenty for your needs so keep that in mind.

100/40 is honestly over kill unless you know you can reach it and don't mind spending an extra $20/month (or $5/week) on just internet.

But yeah Exetel is great.. Flip TV also great.

Kogan if you want to consolidate all your mobile, internet and home phone stuff.

        • Great thanks for the reply.

I just checked and apparently we're getting nbn Hybrid Fibre Coaxial, which apparently uses an existing cable network. However when I searched for what sort of internet was available currently through an online address checker, ADSL was apparently our best option.

Thanks for the recommendations, ended up going with Exetel 50/20. Figure it would be easier to increase my plan rather than lower it. Thanks for the info, much appreciated!

Lol..so true. Mine was planned for Aug-2017. Then no further updates. After a few phone calls, it became 1st quarterof 2018 and then 2nd, 3rd etc. Finally got a date for May-2019. As I couldn't see any update, called them again and now Jun-2020.

The worst thing is most of the house have FTTP NBN. Just a few of us, along a stretch near the road who already has the Phone-line, are having this issue. I am at loss as who we need to contact? I was thinking of contacting the local MP. The irony is that the FTTP NBN pit is on my nature strip.

Thought of going with Optus but doesn't have good signal here. :(

      • I was considering the option of using mobile data until July when it supposedly gets connected so I'm glad I decided against that.

  • Advice please!! Researching nbn its torturous!! Sydney inner west NBN which provider to set up? We don't have anything, we lot of streaming netflix etc. thank you
