My NBN box started beeping every 15 minutes since 2 days ago. I checked the box and a red light is lit next to the words "Replace Battery". To my understanding, the battery is only used during blackouts, so I was wondering if it's worth replacing the battery (or even if there's a law mandating it's replacement). A bit of research shows that the price of a new battery is $40. TIA
Battery Replacement for NBN (FTTH)

I am sure I paid only $25 from ebay (or even less)
Heres the specs from NBN

Haha I didn't search very hard for prices. Thanks for the spec sheet. I guess I'll try hunt for some cheap batteries now.
Also my replacemnt battery has lasted way longer than the original, I think its going on 3 years now whereas the original only lasted less than 2. So its only been about $8 a year for the once or twice we have had blackouts.
I also have a small UPS for the router and my main computer so these can shut down properly when power goes out.
Given now mobile phone access is so cheap compared to 3 years ago, I guess the backup isnt as important.
I didn’t bother replacing mine. Blackouts are rare and I am happy having no internet during those times.
I disconnected the battery since I don't use phone nor the router is available during a power cut. Received few emails about my battery being disconnected/faulty contact NBN immediately: which I ignored. Happy life without any beeps and chirps now :)
Yes your battery sounds gone as ours did after less than two years or so.
For piece of mind I replaced. My router is on separate UPS so I keep internet for a few hours at least in case of blackout.
I can't speak to any legal requirements to replace.
