Anyone Finding It Cheaper to Buy from Online Stores Rather than eBay?

I used to get good deals on eBay, but these days I find I'm buying more and more from online stores and not eBay. Even the eBay 10% vouchers don't make the prices competitive. I mainly buy tools and hardware (building trade). The prices are so inflated on eBay that I cannot understand why anyone buys tools there anymore.

Anyone else finding this, in other areas?

  • For purchases? Yeah they can be steep. For auctions? eBay wins.

    • If you have time for auctions .. ugh.

Only go at them during the final minutes.

I’ve gotten things cheaper from HN rather than eBay sometimes.
I’ve gotten things on eBay cheaper then AliExpress sometimes.
It’s all about doing your research before you click buy it now.

    • Yes, even The Bad Guys are sometimes the cheapest!

  • You need to come to ozb and use ebay coupons that would help a lot.

for second hand items ebay is always the winner. however for new ones I still find ebay cheaper when i use the right coupon codes. i mainly buy only electronics and phones so i dont know about the other areas. you can be right.

    • I agree, eBay and Gumtree are the places for used items

  • With the number of coupon codes coming out, I don't buy anything on eBay without a code anymore.

Most times it tends to be cheaper but gotta keep an eye out on those price hikes before a "sale"

    • Yep me too. No coupon, no sale!

  • I was asked by a guy from France to split a buy it now listing. Actual shipping for a 100g item is still for 500g and $22.30. If I offered a low price just to sell it of $40, ebay ridiculously charge their fees across the item value and shipping, then Paypal take their cut of about 4-5%. The buyer would have to pay $62.30 and the seller would get $28, best case scenario. If the item gets lost or damaged or stolen, the seller is backwards almost as much as they stand to gain. I'm actually clearing space and more willing to get rid of my stuff than most, and even that is getting hard. I'd be better off just throwing stuff in the bin and working at McDonalds.

There are item sizes and weights and values that really fall into the too hard basket and aren't worth the risk for the seller. Some other items under 2cm and under 50g can be sent super cheaply and are a dream.

    • Gumtree is sometimes the only sensible option.
