Good price, has been better previously though!

As to your question op, the Sony 85mm 1.8 is a great "affordable" portrait lens that has proven to be extremely sharp even wide open and good value for money.

    • Agreed, however the Batis is my favourite.. I know it costs a bit more but honestly it’s just amazing it hardly leaves the camera.

        a bit lot more

Crazy cheap! I love this camera. Regarding lenses…
    – 85 1.8 FE is good value
    – 55mm FE zeiss is expensive but for me had enough of an edge over the 50mm sony
    – 35mm I use the sigma art f1.4, it's really a must buy even though it is not cheap.
    – Tamron 28-75 is pretty great value if you prefer zooms.
    – For wide angle, I would go with a cheap Samyang - they are very good optically, for the price.

    • Hi Pinchies, i had both 50 n 55mm but ended up selling the 55 due to cost. However, i pressed hard to see the difference in image quality . And yes 55 is better. May i know what's the edge you found in 55? Thanks

      • I liked the quality of bokeh a little better in particular, and it has sharper corners when wide open.

        • Ahhh ok, I noticed that as well… However, since i'm an amateur I don't mind $500 less for slight worse bokeh :P . Thanks

    • If you’re on a budget and like a light kit… the FE 35 2.8 IS a damn good lens. I had it before getting the FE 35 1.4.
I’ve also owned the sigma art for alpha MA but using an adapter is so clunky and bulky.
Can’t say there’s a world of difference but the Sony Zeiss definitely edged the sigma art just a little. The sigma art is the better value at just half the price.

      • Yeah, it sucks having an adapter… but there is a native Sigma Art 35mm FE now too, it's just a lot more expensive than the other mounts + adapter.

        • I've seen results from the Samyang AF 35mm F1.4… to be honest, even that looks pretty good.

          • @[Deactivated]: It's just noise and speed that puts me off the Samyang AF lenses. Optically they're great value.

I really would love one of these but it's kinda crazy amount of money for amateur photography. Once you add lenses you are easily into $3000 to start.

    • This. The video quality is insane, some youtubers use it and you can definitely tell the difference.

    • It’s also something you’re likely to get a solid five years usage out of as well. With 4K video and an amazing iso performance it’ll serve into the future

I guess it all comes down to what you can justify to yourself.

There are people out there spending $10k on a carbon fiber bike, or adding $30k of mods to a rice burner, or however much some snot-nosed kids cost. Everyone needs a hobby, a reason to go to work every day. If photography is yours, then I think it's justifiable.

Also, $3k is probably optimistic :)

    • $3000 is cheap for a hobby.

**adding, in comparison to a lot of other hobbies. All the other things I do cost me way more to get into and continue doing.

      • Very true I only spend money on gaming have a telescope a high end PC and a drone as my hobbies. I do own an slr but it's a cheapy. I have just had a baby so I don't even have time to game anymore.

I will once kids are older get a decent camera. 4 years I estimate lol.

  • My friends are looking to buy a73. Good price. Thanks a lot

I've been wanting to get one for a while, but after watching the Matti Haapoja review on YouTube and seeing it hunt for focus, it kinda put me off a bit -
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CmL19fSQCMA

In saying that, I was reading the comments and people were saying he's using an adapted Canon lens, or that he can't figure out the AF. Would that be the case or would this camera be that bad in low light/contrast situations similar to his video?

Every issue he complains about is related to using a lens adaptor.
(He even complains about the longer processing of 4K video vs 1080p… I have no words…)

I have the A7, with an EF Metabones adaptor and experienced the same thing.
I also have the Sony FE 35mm and it is an entirely different package.

      • I suspected as much. Thanks heaps! Do you have any particular YouTube reviews or sample footage that you recommend?

    • If you want the best performance possible. Use. Native. Lenses.

Matti's video is extremely misleading because it makes out the af performance to be way worse than reality compared to using native lenses.

      • Isn't he a Canon shill like McKinnon?

EDIT: Just started watching… his first complaint was about the name A73. He shoots with a Canon 1D X mk ii? Pot calling the kettle?

  • Still waiting for my JB HI FI order… sigh

    • Yeah me too… "Processing"

I wonder if I take a copy of my invoice to a Sony Kiosk whether they would honour their price promise.

**Another edit: They say they have a price promise, but I can't find what that promise is. (Found it)

      **Aaannd another:

Competitor must be in stock (not available for back orders)

    • me too, you looking at end of may too?

      • 28th May

        • 29th

          • @[Deactivated]: I see mine has progressed to "Shipped" but no mention of a tracking number or email to update the status.

            • @Flyerone: Yup same! Except I got an Australia post notification of tracking number since I’m registered

  • that's super quick. I reckon there would be more sales next month for EOFY sales.

  • Currently out of stock BTW.

  • Already gone - out of stock. Well that was quick :(

  • Using third party lenses with an adapter will generally result in hunting. Im using a canon flavour sigma 35mm f1.4 art with a viltrox adapter on my A7iii. Hunts in both af modes but is still acceptably quick. Same with the canon 24-105 f4 and 24-70 f2.8…
    Great Camera though…

    • I use it with Sigma MC-11 adapter and it works great, no hunting.

  • Back in stock
