JB Hi-Fi World Square - Redeemed themselves! (Claimed Phone Not Covered by Consumer Guarantee)

**Update: credit where due I suppose: I have no idea why they called me back but they did and gave me $200 credit towards a new phone purchase so that's fair I guess (after the initial refusal..)
**

Always found JB Hi-Fi pretty good, but just recounting a terrible experience at World Square today:

Bought a $400 ZTE phone in November 2017. Would not even turn on by March 2019 so I took it back to JB Hi-Fi who sent it to repairer and told me it couldn't be repaired.

I went to pick it up assuming jb would be good about it. The store manager admitted it was faulty but would not even provide a partial store credit let alone a refund. Claimed the phone was not covered by any consumer guarantee whatsoever.

I've raised it with Fair Trading but I just hate that they must do that to so many people who then don't have the time or energy or knowledge to do anything about it. It's rotten.

Anyway they've lost me!

  • Did you take the managers name and details, fair trading is very interested when people representing big organisations claim that you do not have consumer rights at all.

    • I didn't think of that! But he's just called me back to say his bosses told him he should do something for me (which was awfully quick) so I'll update this post soon..

    • I should of done this with the manager at the Apple store, claiming its not a defect to have the camera not work on your phone. Hence no consumer rights

  • You had the phone for almost two years. I assume it worked well until it stopped working only recently? Why would they give you a full refund if you got utility out of the phone for 18 months?

If you spent 1500 on the phone, you might have a better case but a $400 phone is a really simple basic phone. You would have to argue that a reasonable person would expect a phone of that value to last much longer to be able to enforce ACL.

That's interesting - you reckon a $400 phone should only last 18mths? I would've thought that was an obvious case of not lasting long enough.

      • I'm not saying you don't have a right under ACL - im just saying don't expect them to hand you a full refund.

    • I don't agree that $400 is a simple basic phone.

Doesn't it have a 24 month warranty? Just get ZTE to replace it

As per their terms and conditions for Warranty
The product will be repaired or replaced without charge by ZTE or ZTE’s Authorised Service Centres, if, at their sole discretion, it is found to be faulty within the warranty period. (Inspection and handling charges may apply if your device is not covered by our warranty terms and conditions)
