  • I always find these slices wayyyy too thin. Not good for breakie bacon but ok to cook with in a dish

    Pig of a deal

  • made in Australia from at least 24% Australian ingredients

So they fed the pigs 76% cheap garbage imported from overseas?

    • +1

Pretty sure it means that it's imported pig (often from USA) but that the water, salt, smoke, etc are from Australia.

      😀

Frozen hunks of pork from the USA and all salt water is from Aus.

      • Imported pork from USA or Europe according to the packet.

  • Thanks Op! Crispy deal! 👍

Come on be honest does anything prefer this no fat on it short cut bacon?

    • I wouldn't have it any other way.

    • If it hasn't got fat it ain't bacon.

I love that at Woolworths rasher of bacon is $12/kg. But you just cut the eye part off (shortcut) ant then sell the Streaky bit for $13/kg and the "shortcut" for $17/kg
      Genius.

    and sodium nitrate

    • +1

I like bacon but I'm seriously concerned about sodium nitrate. Anyone have any thoughts?

      • Anyone have any thoughts?

        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sodium_nitrate#Health_concerns

"Studies have shown a link between increased levels of nitrates and increased deaths from certain diseases including Alzheimer's disease, diabetes mellitus, stomach cancer, and Parkinson's disease"

      • You can find bacon cured without nitrates in some places. Or cure it yourself!

        • -2

          or eat it raw

        • Woolies and coles both sell "no added nitrate" bacon

      • +2

If you're "seriously concerned about sodium nitrate" then you need to cut out vegetables - seriously!

        • +1

Vegetables high in sodium nitrate include beets, cabbage, carrots, celery, radishes and spinach. Around 90 percent of the nitrite in your body comes from vegetables, while just 10 percent comes from processed meats, the University of Minnesota Extension explains.

I like to buck the norm and replace my vegetables with more pork product…

Are these the ones pumped with water to increase the weight?

I’ve been pretty much buying short cuts for years - especially for home style bacon and egg muffins, but in the last couple of weeks decided to try streaky bacon again. And getting better at British style scrambled eggs:

      Agree!
Ive also gone back to a fattier cut after finding the lean bacon way too bland.

      Loving my bacon again now!
I get it with rind on also, trim it off and cook separately for an awesome very moreish snack.

      • I suppose we need to strike a balance, lol. I also find it too easy ending up with short cut cooked too hard. Don’t over cook.

This might be a great deal for those that only go to coolies, but Aldi have been selling their 1kg shortcut bacon for under $10 for some time now, and I highly recommend it.

    • Actually 1kg of shortcut bacon is ALWAYS $9/kg at Woolworths.
So if paying with WISH gift card, that's 5% cheaper than Aldi.
Also if paying with a credit card, also cheaper than Aldi as no fee.

      • Yes I know about the 1kg Mayfair pack. I tried it once and never again. Every single piece of bacon was stuck together. It was impossible to get any slices out without damaging them.. even with the most careful use of a thin knife. Terrible. I don't have that problem with the Aldi bacon.

        • Ok, so I just bought one as a test. Pretty slimy, and yes all pieces seem to have moulded into one lump, so not ideal.

However, I just filled the bag with water and the pieces separated okay. I now have 3 x 250g bags, and a bunch of odd size pieces in the pan…

          • @Tiggrrrrr: Hahahahha! Mate! I love your enthusiasm(?) to check it.

Not liking the idea of soggying up my bacon, so I'll stick to the Aldi one. Thanks for telling us that the Woolies one is still the same. 👍🏻 Champ.

            • @raymosaurus: Forgot to update. The streaky part is ok, but the eye part is a bit tough. Probably wouldn't buy again.
Will stick to the Spudshed $6.99/kg bacon.

  • Note this is currently $8 at Woolworths.

However, as above 1kg of this shortcut bacon is ALWAYS $9/kg at Woolworths. Mayfair = P&M = Primo
