  • Is this really going to be better than a samsung galaxy watch at similar or lower price points?

    • +1

Do you want a smart watch or a runners/multisport watch?

    • +4

      Apples and oranges.

The Fenix range is a serious multisport watch for amateur and professional athletes - it also has basic smartwatch capabilities. Galaxy watches are smartwatches that can also do some casual fitness tracking.

90% of the things I use my Fenix for I couldn't use a Galaxy watch for.

      • What is battery life like on this?

      • Like what exactly?

I'm wondering if this would be better than today smart watches for me

        • +2

For me it's mainly running mechanics, cadence, foot strike, V02Max, training plans and fatigue management, GPS length of time for ultra marathons and trail running (events that require 15+ hours of continuous GPS), hiking with back to base and route tracking, multisport for triathlons etc, waterproofing for diving and open water swimming.

Oh and my Fenix 3HR is now years old, has been on hikes, salt water galore, rock climbs, been smashed into rock faces etc and it has zero wear on it.

The battery life on my Fenix 3HR lasts a full week and that's with at least 6 hours of weekly GPS running and at least one gym session. It's usually at around 40% battery at the end of the week.

It's 90% sports watch with 10% handy smartwatch features (shows texts, alerts, meetings, can control music etc).

No Fenix 6 until sometime next year though by the looks of it. The MARQ might be the Fenix 6 alpha but the price range is going to be astronomical.

So if you're in the market for a Fenix and the Forerunners don't hit your sweet spot, it's still a good time to buy.

    • Bought a Fenix 5s for my wife. I'm still rocking a VA3 and will jump to an instinct once I look at doing some longer runs. Fenix is best looking in the "affordable" end of the range imo.

  • As far as I can tell, this model is at a similar price point to the Forerunner 645 music but does not offer music playback or NFC Garmin Pay. Only advantage is has some additional multi-sport/golfing features.
IMO - Forerunner 645 music is better value.

    • +1

There is certainly a perception that the Fenix range is a more upmarket product. But I agree on the features, 645 is half a generation newer too.

My decision came down to aesthetics.

  • Might be better off getting from Amazon with cashback. $449 before cashback white $1 cheaper.

  • Great price

  • what about Fenix 5s vs the new garmin instinct (similar prices)?

    • +1

Instinct has lower battery life, no colour screen, no CIQ, no wifi. It's definitely a cutdown version.

  • OP - "JBHifi allegedly doing them for $399 in their catalogue commencing 2 May"

    Anything online to show this?

    • +1

Only a screenshot received 3rd hand.

      • Awesome, thank you!

      • I wonder whether they'll also discount the Sapphire models… or if your screenshot is the 5S Plus model (it's the only Fenix on JB's site currently with a price tag of $799)

        • The one on JB front cover says 5S premium, the 5S plus is $896 in the catalogue.

          • @CheapGit: Is there such a model as '5S Premium'? I thought there was 5, 5S, 5S Plus

            • @miller0: Looking at it again i picked up the wording wrongly, the word 'Premium' in heading is really just saying premium multisport GPS watch.

              I'm still rocking a 235 though :-)
Also just noticed the 45/245/945 pricing and details are on the garmin site.

              • @CheapGit: The price for the new 245 music is $549. You can get the 645 music for that on most days of the week. I can’t see why you would go for the 245.

  • If only this had maps and proper nav by waypoints!

  • Aren't new LTE versions coming out soon. Also majority are going to come standard with music storage?

  • This being a weekend warrior sport watch will be a tough one to explain to the Mrs.

Double plus for the JBhifi heads up edit
